Tottenham Faces Key Injuries Ahead of Premier League Opener

Tottenham will kick off their Premier League season without two of their most important defenders – and their captaincy hierarchy in tatters.

Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro have both been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Brentford, with Pape Matar Sarr a late addition to the injury list after feeling hamstring pain on Friday.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi confirmed the blows on the eve of the game. “Micky is not on the list for tomorrow, like Pedro Porro,” he said, before revealing Sarr had also dropped out. “Pape Matar Sarr no, because he felt some pain in his hamstring today. Nothing serious, but we don’t take risks.”

It leaves Spurs stripped of both their new captain and first vice-captain for the opening day, a symbolic setback as much as a tactical one.

Van de Ven, a cornerstone of Tottenham’s defence, has been nursing an issue picked up on the club’s pre-season tour of Australia. De Zerbi tried to play down concerns.

“Today, he worked with the group, and he is going very well,” he explained. “He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”

Even so, the Dutchman will not be involved at Brentford. Nor will Porro, whose absence at right-back opens the door for a reshuffled back line and a very different look to Spurs’ leadership on the pitch.

De Zerbi pointed to the options he still has at centre-back. “[Marcos] Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow,” he said, indicating the pair are ready to step in.

Captaincy Considerations

The armband picture is just as intriguing. With Van de Ven and Porro both out, attention turns down the leadership list. Ben Davies is third in line but is not expected to start, while James Maddison, fourth, is short of match fitness after his own disrupted pre-season.

That leaves Archie Gray, just 18 and fifth in the leadership group, as a surprise contender to captain Tottenham while deputising for Porro at right-back.

An opening day, a London derby, and a teenager potentially leading Spurs out. For De Zerbi’s new regime, the first test of resilience has arrived before a ball has even been kicked.
