Hat-Tricks Scored in Premier League Defeats: How Rare Is It?
Brian Brobbey made history recently by scoring a hat-trick while playing for Sunderland in their 5-3 loss to Manchester City. This marked the first time in 19 years that a player managed to net three goals but still end up on the losing side in a Premier League game.
Since the Premier League began in 1992, only six players have scored a hat-trick and still lost their match. Brobbey is just the sixth to do so and the first since 2007.
Players Who Scored Hat-Tricks in Losing Efforts
- Matt le Tissier: Scored twice under these circumstances; once during Southampton’s 4-3 defeat to Oldham Athletic in May 1993 and again in a 4-3 home loss to Nottingham Forest in August 1995.
- Dion Dublin: Netted a treble for Coventry City in a 4-3 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in December 1995.
- Dwight Yorke: Scored three times for Aston Villa during a 4-3 loss against Newcastle United in September 1996.
