PSG Opens Talks for Yan Diomande: Liverpool Left Reeling
Paris Saint-Germain have moved to the front of the queue for Yan Diomande, opening formal talks over a deal that could reshape their attack – and Liverpool’s summer.
The French champions have begun discussions to establish what it will take to prise Diomande from RB Leipzig, with sources indicating the player’s camp has now told Liverpool that Paris is his preferred destination if he leaves Germany in this window. For Liverpool, who have spent months building a case for Anfield, that message cuts deep.
They had tracked the Ivory Coast winger closely since last year, convinced that if he chose the Premier League, he would choose them. Their recruitment team worked early and aggressively, aware that once Europe’s heavyweights fully engaged, the landscape would change. It has – in the space of 24 critical hours.
Liverpool’s €100m push meets Leipzig’s wall
Liverpool recently tabled a package worth around €100million (£86.3m / $114m) in an attempt to seize the initiative before the World Cup, hoping to shut down the prospect of a bidding war. Leipzig did not blink.
The Bundesliga side have held firm to a valuation closer to €130million (£112.2m / $148.2m) and, crucially, to a clear stance: they would rather keep Diomande for at least one more season and then tie him to a new long-term deal. That position has not softened, even as the clubs circle.
PSG, though, sense an opening. The club’s confidence is buoyed by strong links between transfer advisor Luis Campos and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, now Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Those relationships have only strengthened belief in Paris that a deal is possible.
The Ligue 1 champions are also encouraged by the most important factor of all: Diomande’s preference. With the player leaning towards the Parc des Princes and exploratory talks underway, PSG believe they now hold a commanding position.
Luis Enrique is a major driver. He views Diomande as one of the most electrifying young attacking talents in Europe and has already begun plotting how to fold him into an evolving, youthful front line.
Barcola caught in the crossfire
PSG’s pursuit of Diomande will not be without collateral damage inside their own dressing room. The clearest potential casualty is Bradley Barcola.
The France World Cup star endured a frustrating Champions League run-in, increasingly watching from the bench as others were preferred. That reduced role has not gone unnoticed. Sources indicate Barcola has already made it clear he will push for a move if he cannot secure guaranteed first-team status next season.
Interest in him is intense. Liverpool are among the clubs monitoring his situation, and Diomande’s arrival in Paris would only harden the likelihood of Barcola seeking an exit.
Liverpool have long earmarked the 23-year-old as a serious alternative to Diomande and are well aware that he is valued at around €90million (£77.6m / $102.6m). New Reds boss Andoni Iraola is said to “love” Barcola’s profile. If Diomande slips away, this could be the moment Liverpool pivot decisively towards the Frenchman.
Four big swings in Paris
Diomande is just one piece of a broader, ambitious rebuild at PSG.
Their chase for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche is being treated as a separate track, not a fallback. Internally, Akliouche is viewed as the natural successor to Lee Kang-in, who is closing on a move to Atletico Madrid, rather than a direct rival to Diomande.
PSG are also retooling their centre-forward options after Goncalo Ramos’ club-record switch to AC Milan. Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi has emerged as a leading candidate to bolster Enrique’s front line, with work continuing quietly in the background.
The Paris hierarchy are not stopping there. They also believe they are well placed in the race for Lille prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille are open to a sale on one condition: a loan back for the coming season. That structure suits PSG’s long-term planning and allows them to bank a future midfielder without crowding the current squad.
Any move for Bouaddi, though, will be shaped by outgoings. Fabian Ruiz continues to draw interest from across Europe, yet Enrique would ideally keep the Spain international for at least another year, valuing his experience amid a wave of younger arrivals.
Anfield left waiting
For Liverpool, the immediate focus stubbornly remains Diomande. They have invested time, scouting resource and strategic planning into a player they see as a cornerstone for the next era. They still admire his ceiling. They still want him.
But the reality has shifted. PSG have opened talks. The player prefers Paris. Leipzig refuse to move unless their top-end valuation is met.
What looked, only a few weeks ago, like a move within Liverpool’s grasp now resembles an uphill climb. The question for Anfield is stark: do they keep fighting for a reluctant target at a premium price, or turn the setback in Paris into an opportunity named Bradley Barcola?
