Rangers Supporters Banned for Five Years After Old Firm Chaos
Two Rangers supporters have been hit with five-year bans from every football ground in the UK after ugly scenes at an Old Firm Scottish Cup quarter-final in March.
The pair were caught on separate pieces of footage as the tie descended into chaos at full-time, souring one of the showpiece fixtures of the Scottish season.
Mackenzie Graham, 21, from Glasgow, was filmed vaulting a fence before charging onto the pitch and leading a group of fans in a full-scale incursion. He repeatedly urged others to follow him over the barrier, turning a volatile atmosphere into a full-blown pitch invasion.
In the stands, 19-year-old John Smith from Peterhead was seen throwing a bottle into the section housing Celtic supporters. Police moved quickly to apprehend him amid the disorder.
The trouble erupted at the end of the match and rumbled on as stewards and officers tried to move spectators to safety. Children and disabled fans were among those caught up in the panic as the situation spilled beyond the pitch and into the surrounding areas.
Both Graham and Smith admitted the charges against them. The bans now remove them from every football stadium in the country for the next five years – a stark warning at a time when the Old Firm rivalry remains as fierce, and as closely watched, as ever.
