Raúl Asencio's Last Chance to Avoid Surgery

Raúl Asencio is down to his last throw of the dice.

The Real Madrid defender, who has already fought his way back from a quadriceps injury this season, is again battling pain in the same leg. This time, the problem sits lower: his shin, a nagging issue that dates back to last season and has stubbornly refused to heal.

A race against the knife

According to Marca, the situation has become serious enough for Asencio to start a new, intensive treatment plan. He has already gone through several sessions at Valdebebas, where the focus is on easing the tension in the affected area and accelerating the recovery of the damaged bone.

This is the last conservative option on the table. If the shin fails to respond, surgery awaits. And with it, an expected absence of six to eight weeks.

The warning signs have been there for months. Leg problems disrupted the final stretch of last season, a period when Real Madrid were being hit from all sides by fitness issues. The squad was thin, defenders were scarce, and Asencio made a choice that defined his character as much as it endangered his body.

Asked if he might step aside to protect himself, he snapped back: “I will not stop now, impossible.”

He didn’t. He played on.

Playing through pain

It was courageous. It was risky. It kept him on the pitch when his team were stretched to the limit.

To keep him available, the medical staff opted for a compromise. Asencio underwent a minimally invasive procedure aimed at removing abnormal cells from the scar tissue on his shin bone, where poorly healed bony growths had formed. The idea was simple: reduce irritation, buy time, avoid the operating theatre.

Time, though, has not been kind.

Healing never reached the level doctors had hoped for. The area remained fragile, and there was a real fear that what was a fissure could evolve into a full fracture. The chosen treatment allowed him to limp through the decisive weeks of the season, but it did not solve the underlying problem. He kept playing, kept absorbing the impact, kept pushing his luck.

When the campaign finally ended, the plan shifted. No more injections, no more compromises. Just rest. A summer designed around three words: rest, recover, heal.

A summer that didn’t fix it

The expectation was clear: after months of relentless strain, the shin bone would finally respond once the load dropped. It didn’t. Instead of easing, the condition worsened. The same bone that had haunted the run-in last season once again threatened to shape this one.

The quadriceps injury in the same leg only complicated matters. It forced changes in his training, altered his movement patterns, and may have increased the stress on the already damaged shin. Every adjustment came with a cost somewhere else.

Now there is no room left for half-measures. Asencio has embarked on what is being treated as a final attempt to avoid the operating table. The new treatment at Valdebebas is already underway, the first sessions completed, all with a single goal: reduce pressure on the bone and give it one last chance to heal without surgical intervention.

The odds are not on his side. Club sources accept that if the response is not clearly positive, surgery will be unavoidable. In that case, Asencio will disappear from the pitch for around two months.

For a defender who once said “impossible” to the idea of stopping, the toughest challenge now may be accepting that this time, he has no say.
