Rayan Ait-Nouri Set to Leave Man City for United
Rayan Ait-Nouri’s Manchester City career looks to be ending almost as soon as it began, with the Algerian full-back already plotting a January escape and Manchester United among the clubs exploring a move.
Signed from Wolverhampton in 2025, Ait-Nouri arrived with pedigree and promise. He has found only a closed door. Enzo Maresca has not given him a single Premier League minute, and the manager has been blunt in private and public about where the defender sits in his plans.
Inside the club, the situation has moved beyond uncertainty. Sporting director Hugo Viana has been tasked with drawing up an exit strategy, and City want the player’s future resolved before the winter window even opens. Their stance is clear: they are ready to let him go and are expected to ask for around £30 million.
Maresca underlined his position earlier this month, openly confirming that Ait-Nouri is not his first-choice option and stressing the level of competition for a place in his side. For a 23-year-old who left Wolves to kick on at the very top, the message could hardly be starker.
Across town, United are watching closely. The Old Trafford hierarchy were offered Ait-Nouri on deadline day in the last window and showed genuine interest, but the clock beat them and the deal died with the buzzer. It has not stayed dead for long.
The lines between the two Manchester clubs have reopened. Intermediaries are now working to understand whether a deal can be built in time for January, and what shape it might take. Ait-Nouri is thought to be open to the switch, which would carry a certain historical weight: no player has moved directly from City to United since Owen Hargreaves in 2011.
United are not alone. Everton have also registered their interest, but they are tied up in Premier League regulations. They cannot bring in Ait-Nouri on loan unless they first complete the permanent signing of Jack Grealish, with league rules blocking clubs from loaning two players from the same side at once. Until that situation changes, their hands are effectively tied.
City, for their part, are willing to be flexible on structure, if not on control. They are prepared to sanction a loan, allowing suitors to avoid paying a full fee up front. But there is a catch. Any agreement would include a mandatory clause to make the transfer permanent once Ait-Nouri reaches a set number of appearances.
For a player stuck on zero league games under Maresca, those appearances will almost certainly come somewhere else. The only real question now is whether his next chapter is written in red, blue, or another colour entirely.
