Real Madrid's Cautious Approach with Aurelien Tchouameni
Real Madrid are in no mood to gamble with Aurelien Tchouameni.
According to AS, the club have drawn a clear line: the French midfielder will not return until he is at full capacity, even if that means waiting several more weeks. Jose Mourinho has made that stance public and firm.
No shortcuts after World Cup setback
Tchouameni’s problems trace back to the World Cup. He picked up an injury that forced him to sit out two games in the latter stages of the tournament, only to return for the semi-final. That decision aggravated the issue and left him unable to train at the same intensity as his teammates once he came back to Madrid.
The effects have lingered. He missed the entirety of Real Madrid’s preseason friendlies, and Mourinho has refused to be drawn into rushing him back just because the competitive calendar has started.
The Portuguese coach knows exactly how important Tchouameni is to his structure, which is why he is prepared to wait. The priority is not the third matchday, or even the fourth. The priority is the season.
“With Tchouameni, we have to keep our emotions in check. I don’t want him to be in and out, in and out again,” Mourinho said before the game against Malaga, drawing a clear boundary for everyone listening.
“I don’t want to start the season in August with a situation like this. I hope to have Tchouameni fit again, and I prefer to wait a little longer,” he added.
The message was unmistakable: no risks, no half-measures.
Target: Rayo Vallecano and beyond
Inside Valdebebas, the working idea is that Tchouameni will start to reappear around the fifth La Liga matchday, when Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of 14 September. That is the tentative window, not a promise.
Mourinho views the Frenchman as one of the pillars of his side. Precisely because of that, he does not want to force a comeback in the third league game just to say he is back. The holding midfielder is Madrid’s strongest defensive specialist in the centre of the pitch, the player who gives the rest of the midfield licence to breathe and roam.
Real Madrid’s caution is also shaped by bitter experience. Last season, the squad suffered 54 injuries in total, a staggering number that set off alarms at the training ground and forced the club to rethink how it handles recovery.
One of the first measures: stricter control of return timelines. No more rushing players back for a specific date if there is any doubt. Tchouameni has become the clearest example of that new line.
From whistles to key reference point
Tchouameni’s current status at the Bernabeu is the product of a long climb. His early seasons were rocky. Parts of the home crowd questioned him, and the whistles at times were loud and unforgiving. He had to rebuild himself both physically and mentally.
Last season, he did exactly that. He grew into one of the most appreciated players among Real Madrid supporters, a midfielder whose presence calmed games and whose absences were felt immediately.
With uncertainty surrounding Eduardo Camavinga and his ability to consistently hold the deepest role, Tchouameni stands alone as the one midfielder who can reliably anchor the centre of the pitch week after week.
The end of last season, though, was not without turbulence. His conflict with Federico Valverde cast a shadow over the final stretch. Both players have since confirmed that the dispute has been resolved, but doubts remain about how that relationship translates on the pitch, especially as they did not share more minutes together after the incident.
All of that forms the backdrop to this season. Tchouameni now has to build on his resurgence and confirm his status as an undisputed starter in Mourinho’s project.
For that to happen, Real Madrid have decided on patience. Mourinho will only reintroduce him when the midfielder’s fitness is fully restored and his confidence matches it. No shortcuts, no emotional decisions — just the long view on a player he believes can hold the spine of his team.
