Real Madrid's Win: Mourinho on Arda Guler and Diomande's Roles
Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano gave Jose Mourinho more than just three points. It handed him a platform to set out his stall on some of the most talked‑about names in his squad – and he used it.
The scoreline was comfortable. The selection debate around it is anything but.
Arda’s spark, Diomande’s dilemma
Mourinho did not wait long to address the obvious topic. Arda Guler started on the bench, came on, and tilted the game.
“Arda Guler plays a lot when he is on the pitch,” Mourinho said, making it clear that minutes do not tell the whole story. The impact does. “Arda has a very positive impact on the team's performance. When he came on, he made the difference in the stability of the play.”
Then came the other side of the coin: Yan Diomande. The Ivorian started, and Mourinho knew exactly what the narrative would have been if he had not.
“I will say with 100% certainty that if Diomande had not started today, the first question would have been: why is Diomande not playing? On the bench you see nothing but quality. The changes will happen from one match to another.”
That is the reality of this Real Madrid squad. Every decision leaves a star looking over his shoulder.
Mourinho refused to dress Diomande’s situation up as a drama. He framed it as a process.
“I am a little too old to feel pressure because of a player's situation,” he said. “You have different lists of players, and sometimes you have to pray that no player gets injured, and at other times you have many solutions. He will improve gradually. He has little time at the top level, and he has a lot to learn tactically. But he possesses amazing potential.”
The praise was specific, not vague.
“Diomande gives us many options in one-on-one duels, passing and shooting, and he can also play in Vini's position, and on the right side, just as Arda can play there or in Bellingham's position. At the moment, I want to help him develop.”
For a young player, that is both a compliment and a challenge. Versatile, dangerous, but still raw. In this Madrid, versatility is a blessing only if you can keep up with the tactical demands.
Vinicius near top speed
From the emerging names, Mourinho turned to one of his pillars. Vinicius Junior did not need a goal on the night to earn a detailed assessment.
“Vinicius is in better physical shape than ever, but he is just one millimetre short of reaching his top speed,” Mourinho said. The margin is tiny; the expectations are huge.
“His ability to repeat efforts is immense. It is a process he is gradually absorbing. Mentally, he is very strong, and he knows Real Madrid more than anyone else. He plays with great responsibility, which is the responsibility of playing for Real Madrid and the Brazil national team. He is calm. The goals will come.”
That last line sounded less like hope and more like a warning to opponents. If this is Vinicius just shy of his peak, La Liga will have to deal with the version Mourinho is waiting for.
