Richarlison’s Return to Vasco Collapses Amid Spurs Standoff
Richarlison’s route out of Tottenham has closed again, and time in Brazil is almost up.
A proposed move to Vasco da Gama has collapsed, leaving the forward’s future shrouded in uncertainty with the Brazilian transfer window shutting on Friday night.
Sources indicate Spurs had settled on a fee with Vasco for the 29-year-old to return home. The framework was there, the clubs aligned. Then the deal hit the same familiar wall: personal terms.
Those negotiations are understood to have broken down, just as they did with Everton on Premier League deadline day, when a £35m switch fell apart over disagreements on the contract.
This latest setback leaves Richarlison in limbo. He has been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad, frozen from the immediate picture while his situation drags on in the background.
Tension has been building all week. On Thursday, it emerged that Richarlison and Spurs are in dispute over the remaining nine months of his current deal. The contract runs to next summer, but Tottenham hold an option to extend it by a further year, a clause that gives the club leverage and leaves the player with fewer easy exits.
Richarlison is understood to be actively exploring his options. Those close to the talks suggest he is keen to be released from the remainder of his contract, freeing him to reset his career elsewhere. For now, though, Spurs control the timeline.
Roberto de Zerbi was never likely to fan the flames, and he stuck rigidly to that line when asked about the saga in his news conference on Friday.
“I don’t know,” the Tottenham head coach said. “It’s not my job.”
Pressed on the situation, De Zerbi turned instead to what he believes all parties already understand.
“What I can say is I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison and I know very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last month, two months.
“I know, the club knows, he knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows better than you [the media]. Much better.”
The message was clear: the real conversations are happening far from the cameras.
With the Brazilian window about to close and the Vasco route now blocked, the emerging expectation is that Richarlison will stay at Spurs, at least in the short term. But stay as what? An unused asset? A reintegrated forward? Or a high-profile contract dispute waiting for the next opening?
The clock in Brazil is almost at zero. The standoff in north London is only just warming up.
