Robert Moreno Named Interim Head Coach of South Korea After World Cup Setback
The Korea Football Association (KFA) has brought in former Spain head coach Robert Moreno to steer the national team after a disappointing exit in the group stage of the World Cup. Moreno, aged 48, steps in following Hong Myung-bo's resignation amid internal struggles within the KFA.
New Leadership Amid Crisis
Following an open recruitment process, the KFA appointed Moreno as interim manager. This vacancy emerged after Hong stepped down after South Korea’s early elimination in June's World Cup held in North America. Moreno is the first Spaniard to ever manage the South Korean national squad. His contract may be extended to cover the upcoming Asian Cup, depending on his performance in the coming months.
Challenges Inside Korean Football
The KFA has been dealing with significant turmoil recently. Last month, police raided its headquarters linked to Hong’s controversial 2024 hiring. There was also public backlash after accusations surfaced about providing sexual entertainment to foreign referees, prompting official apologies.
Moreno's Background and Past Controversies
Moreno’s international experience includes a stint as Spain’s caretaker coach in 2019 when Luis Enrique stepped down due to personal reasons. Their professional relationship later soured, with Enrique accusing Moreno of disloyalty upon returning before Euro 2020.
Moreno also faced allegations from Russian media regarding the use of artificial intelligence tools during his time managing Sochi, which he strongly denied in a letter to Spanish newspaper Marca. He clarified, "I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups or choose players. That is completely false." He emphasized that decisions are made collaboratively with his coaching staff and highlighted his early career focus on data and video analysis.
Upcoming Fixtures and Opportunities
Moreno is set to lead South Korea in friendly matches at home against Ecuador and Uruguay in September. This will be followed by games versus Venezuela and Uzbekistan in October, with additional fixtures possible in November. The KFA confirmed his potential role at the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia scheduled from January 7 to February 5, pending a performance review. These matches offer a chance for Moreno to rebuild confidence among fans and restore stability to the national team.
