Roma Targets El Mala Amid Transfer Saga

AS Roma have found their man on the left flank. The question is whether Said El Mala wants them back.

According to Geissblog, the Giallorossi have added the 19-year-old 1. FC Köln attacker to their shortlist and are prepared to go all in. Cologne’s asking price sits at a hefty €50 million, and Roma, it is claimed, are willing to meet it.

This is not a one-off impulse. Roma were recently linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya, with a fee of around €45 million under discussion. That level of interest underlines a clear message from the capital: for the right wide forward, they are ready to pay Champions League money, even without Champions League guarantees. El Mala is firmly in that bracket.

There is, however, a problem.

Sky reports that El Mala, already capped seven times by Germany at Under-21 level, does not currently see his immediate future in Serie A. Roma may be opening the door, but the player is not walking through it yet.

Dortmund frozen out

If Roma are waiting at the front gate, Borussia Dortmund have effectively been shown the exit.

A move to the Westfalenstadion now appears to be off the table. Geissblog reports that Cologne were unhappy on two fronts: the financial package did not convince them, and the club’s hierarchy were angered by what they perceived as Dortmund’s behaviour during talks.

More specifically, Cologne were “not in agreement with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely”. That wording leaves little room for interpretation. At the Geißbockheim, the decision was made to cut ties with Dortmund immediately and break off all negotiations.

One heavyweight suitor gone, another circling, and a third hesitating. The market around El Mala is crowded, yet strangely fragile.

Leipzig stuck on the sidelines

In the Bundesliga, only RB Leipzig remain in the race – at least on paper.

For now, the Saxony club have told Cologne they neither can nor want to meet the €50 million valuation. The number is too high, the room to manoeuvre too tight. Leipzig’s interest is real, but the finances are not.

That could change quickly. A sale of Yan Diomande would inject fresh money into their budget and potentially drag Leipzig back into the fight. Until that happens, though, their role is that of an observer rather than an aggressor.

So the situation hangs in the balance. Roma are ready to pay. Leipzig are willing but unable. Dortmund are out. And El Mala, at least for the moment, is not pushing for Italy.

Answering the noise on the pitch

Amid all this, the teenager is doing the one thing he can fully control: playing football.

In Thursday’s 8-0 pre-season win over Bergisch Gladbach, El Mala scored his first goal of the current campaign. It was only a friendly, but it served as a reminder. While clubs argue over millions and posture over negotiations, the 19-year-old continues to build his case on the grass.

Cologne know exactly what they have. Roma know what they want. Leipzig know what they need to change.

The next move belongs to the market – and to a young winger who suddenly has the power to shape three clubs’ plans with a single decision.
