Ronald Araujo Shines in Liverpool Win While Eyeing Barcelona's Champions League Chances

Ronald Araujo walked off the Anfield pitch with three points in his pocket and Barcelona still on his mind.

On loan at Liverpool from the Catalan giants, the Uruguayan centre-back produced a commanding display in the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, then openly admitted he remains glued to events at his parent club.

Speaking to "Movistar Liga de Campeones" after the game, Araujo did not dodge the inevitable question. Barcelona came up quickly. His answer was instant.

"Definitely, Barcelona are among the leading contenders to win the Champions League," he said. "They are performing brilliantly."

There was no hint of divided loyalty, just a player who still feels a strong bond with the club that shaped him. Araujo explained that he continues to track every development at Barcelona and takes genuine pride in the progress of his former team-mates.

"I follow them. I am very happy for my team-mates," he said. "They have a great side. I always support them, and I am very grateful for what they are achieving now."

Those words landed on the back of a standout performance in red. Under Andoni Iraola, Araujo has quickly become a pillar of this Liverpool side, and against Atletico he underlined exactly why.

Solid in the duels, aggressive in his positioning, he also delivered one of the game’s key attacking moments. With Liverpool chasing the match, Araujo produced a moment of real class inside the box: a deft backheel that opened up the defence and released Dominik Szoboszlai in space. The Hungarian’s cross did the rest, beating Jan Oblak and dragging Liverpool level.

From there, Anfield roared, Liverpool turned the screw, and Atletico finally cracked.

Araujo’s night ended with applause from the stands and praise from the touchline. His future may still be tied to Barcelona, his heart clearly still warmed by their resurgence under Hansi Flick, but right now he is driving Liverpool’s cause in Europe.
