Rúben Amorim’s Milan rebuild is beginning where his last project ended – at Old Trafford.
Barely a month into the job at San Siro, the Portuguese coach has made it clear to the Milan hierarchy which profile he wants to anchor his new-look side. At the top of that list sits Noussair Mazraoui, a player he knows, trusts and once publicly anointed as the future of his Manchester United team.
Amorim looks back to move forward
Amorim arrives in Milan with scars from a bruising 14‑month spell in the Premier League, but also with a very clear idea of what he wants from his defenders. Versatility, intelligence, comfort on the ball. Mazraoui ticks every box.
Reports in Italy, relayed by Metro Sport, indicate that Amorim has specifically told the Milan board of his admiration for the Morocco international and his belief that the 28‑year‑old would be an ideal fit for the Rossoneri back line. It is not a casual name-drop. It is a deliberate push for a player he has already built around once.
Mazraoui has made 77 appearances for United since his £17 million move from Bayern Munich in 2024, quietly becoming one of the most useful pieces in the squad thanks to his ability to operate across the defence. Right-back, left-back, tucked inside as an extra midfielder – he has offered solutions in all of those roles.
That tactical flexibility is exactly what Amorim leaned on in Manchester and what he now wants to import to Serie A.
A manager’s favourite, a club’s dilemma
Transfer specialist Matteo Moretto has underlined just how highly Amorim rates the defender. Speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, Moretto described Mazraoui as “one of Amorim’s favourites”, stressing that the Milan coach holds the player in particularly high regard.
There is, however, a hard reality behind the admiration. As things stand, there are no negotiations between Milan and United, no formal talks, no direct contact. Mazraoui is under contract until 2028 with an option, a long commitment that puts United in a position of strength.
The interest is real. The deal is not – at least not yet.
Milan’s pursuit is further complicated by the broader context of Amorim’s transfer plans. He had earmarked Manuel Ugarte, another former Sporting CP pupil he later took to Manchester, as a major target for this window. That plan collapsed when Ugarte suffered a serious injury at the World Cup, effectively ending any hope of a summer move.
United have also closed the door on other potential routes into Amorim’s old dressing room. The club are described as unwilling to entertain offers for Mason Mount or Amad, removing two more names from Milan’s shortlist before talks could even start.
So the focus narrows. If Milan are to raid Old Trafford, Mazraoui is the realistic flag-bearer of that ambition.
Old praise, new context
Amorim’s admiration for Mazraoui is not a recent development born of transfer-market desperation. During his time at United, he spoke openly and glowingly about the defender’s profile and importance.
“He’s a top player. He understands the game. He knows how to attack, he’s very technical, he’s very good defensively and he’s very good one-on-one. He’s a modern player,” Amorim said shortly after taking over at Old Trafford.
“I think he’s the future of our team. When you think about him, you think we need more players like Nous that can control the tempo, they are really, really good and comfortable with the ball. So, Nous, I’m really happy with him.”
Those words now hang over the current situation. Back then, Mazraoui was the future of Amorim’s United. Now, with Amorim gone and Milan rebuilding, he is being lined up as a cornerstone of a new project in a new league.
For Milan, that prior relationship offers something precious in a volatile market: certainty. Amorim knows exactly what he would be buying, how he would use him, where he would fit in a back line that has lacked consistency and clarity in recent seasons.
For United, it poses a different question. How do you price a player who is both tactically valuable and tied down long term, yet coveted by a coach who once built his system around him?
Lessons from England, plans for Italy
Amorim has been candid about his time in England. At his Milan unveiling, he admitted that the Premier League spell had forced him to confront his own mistakes, even if he stopped short of detailing them.
“The first thing is it’s hard to explain the mistakes because for that I would have to explain the context of the last adventure,” he said. “It’s hard to say to you every mistake. The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot and I made some mistakes.”
San Siro, then, is his reset button. A chance to refine his methods, to apply those lessons without repeating the same errors that led to his Manchester exit. The players he pushes for this summer will be a direct reflection of that evolution.
Mazraoui, with his blend of technical quality and tactical discipline, represents the kind of controlled, intelligent football Amorim wants Milan to embody. He is not a luxury signing. He is a structural one.
For now, the idea remains just that – an idea. No bids, no negotiations, only a manager’s clear approval and a board aware of his wishes.
The window, though, has only just opened its first cracks. If Milan move, and if United’s stance softens, the defender once tipped as the future of Amorim’s United could yet become the face of his Milan instead.
