Sage Confirms Henderson and Mateta Out Before International Break

Sage has confirmed that Dean Henderson and Jean-Philippe Mateta will not feature again before the international break, drawing a clear line under any hopes of a quick comeback for the pair.

“Henderson's situation is more certain than Mateta's situation,” he said. “We will have to wait on both of them. I'll be able to give a better answer in two weeks. I also want a quick answer but I cannot give anything as yet.”

It leaves him short in key areas, and that shortage has already shaped some awkward decisions in Europe.

Doucoure left out of Europa squad

Cheick Doucoure’s absence from the matchday squad for Thursday’s Europa League opener against Lech Poznan raised eyebrows. Sage’s explanation was blunt: it came down to the list.

“He just isn't in the European squad list,” he said. “We have a little problem with that because we don't have too many players in his position currently in training, with four players out injured off our list. It wasn't easy to make the choices, but I had to and we can maybe change the list in January if we qualify for the knockouts. He can play in the Premier League.”

The trade-off is clear: a stretched squad, four injuries, and a competition that forces hard calls. January offers a possible reset, but only if they get out of the group.

Four goals, four scorers, one statement

On the pitch, though, Sage had plenty to enjoy in the win over Poznan.

“I feel a lot of satisfaction because we scored four goals in four different ways through four different players,” he said. “We also got a clean sheet, which is very important for us as we worked a lot on that after our last game.”

Four scorers, four types of goals, and a defence that finally held firm. It was the kind of performance that can shift the mood of a season.

Asked if confidence was building inside the dressing room, Sage pointed to exactly that variety.

“It is better because the players are aware of the win last time out, of how to score and how to defend, of lots of players coming back into the fold. Maybe the confidence is sometimes in the diversity of options, especially as it gave us other ways to win.”

Options. Different routes to goal. Players returning. For a coach juggling injuries and registration headaches, that diversity is gold.

Sarr’s mixed reception and slow return

Ismaila Sarr’s return from a long injury lay-off should have been a straightforward positive. It wasn’t. Some fans at Selhurst Park booed him when he came on.

Sage defended his winger and leaned into the bigger picture.

“I know the fans love him and I think he deserves to be loved the way he is,” he insisted. “It is always difficult to come back after a long injury, but the most important thing for us was putting him on the pitch and giving him his first minutes. He will get better and better with more time out there. He can maybe start, but I don't think he can play the full match.”

The reaction from the stands, Sage argued, is tied to the uncertainty that surrounded Sarr’s future.

“It is normal because everybody thought he would leave,” he said. “Now he has made his comeback, I would like to think everybody is happy to see him on the pitch. We should all enjoy his goals and our wins with him.”

The message was clear: the speculation is over, he is here, and the team will need his goals.

Canvot challenged, then recalled

Jaydee Canvot’s return to the matchday squad after being left out for the league game against Ipswich was another small but telling twist in Sage’s management.

“He gave a good impression in preparation for this game,” Sage explained. “He understood why I left him out and what I expect from him. He is a really good player. I've managed some young talents in my career and I know sometimes they need this kind of encouragement. They have to realise it isn't sufficient to just be good, you have to be very good.”

A dropped weekend, a reaction in training, a recall in Europe. For Sage, that’s the standard. With Henderson and Mateta sidelined and the European list already stretched, those who are fit now have a simple choice: be very good, or be left behind.
