Inter’s shot at history against Napoli
Inter walk into their clash with Napoli carrying a statistic that feels like a loaded weapon. They have scored in each of the last 16 Serie A meetings between the sides. No team has ever managed 17 in a row against Napoli. One goal. That is all it would take to rip a new page out of the record books.
The stakes do not stop there. Win, and Inter make it three victories from three to open a league season for the first time since 2023-2024. It would be an early statement from a club that has grown used to setting the pace.
At the heart of it all stands Hakan Calhanoglu. Two games, two goals so far. If he finds the net again on Saturday, he will become the first midfielder in Inter’s history to score in each of the opening three fixtures of a single Serie A campaign. For a club that has housed some of the great midfield names, that is no small line to claim as his own.
Napoli, though, do not arrive as mere extras in Inter’s story. They are unbeaten in their last five league meetings with the Nerazzurri, with one win and four draws in that run. Stretch it to six without defeat and they will match a sequence they have not touched since 2013–2015.
History still tilts towards Inter. Across this fixture they boast 70 wins, 48 defeats and 42 draws, and 229 goals scored – a haul bettered only by Juventus in their meetings with Napoli. But records have a habit of cracking when the pressure builds, and this one comes with weight on both sides.
Roma’s perfect storm meets their bogey side
Roma have opened the season like a team in a hurry. Two games, two 4-0 wins. Eight scored, none conceded. That start places them in a very small club: only three teams in Serie A history have hit at least eight goals without reply in their first two rounds.
The next step is even more tempting. The last team to reach at least nine goals without conceding across their opening three league matches was Juventus in 1983-1984. Keep the run going, and Roma stand on the brink of matching a feat that has stood untouched for four decades.
Then comes the catch. Atalanta.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have turned themselves into Roma’s nightmare fixture. Atalanta are unbeaten in the last eight league meetings, with six wins and two draws, the longest such run in the history of this match-up. They do not just resist Roma; they beat them. Regularly.
The Olimpico has offered little protection. Roma have managed just one win in their last 12 home Serie A games against Atalanta, drawing six and losing five. For all the noise around Roma’s flying start, the numbers around this opponent are brutal.
Atalanta carry their own targets into the capital. A victory would give them three wins from three to begin a Serie A season for the first time since 2020-2021. Donyell Malen leads their charge, already with 19 goals in his first 20 Serie A appearances. Only Gunnar Nordahl and José Altafini have ever done better at that stage, both reaching 20 in 20. That is the level of company he keeps.
Lazar Samardzic adds another layer. He has scored in each of his last six Serie A seasons. If he provides an assist against Roma, he will become the youngest player since 2004-2005 to both score and assist in six different Serie A campaigns. For a fixture dripping in historical quirks, his personal streak fits perfectly.
Juve–Milan: a rivalry locked in stalemate
Juventus versus Milan usually sells itself. Titles, legends, controversy. This time, it comes wrapped in a strange statistic: four of the last five meetings have finished 0-0, including the most recent two.
Never before has this fixture produced three consecutive goalless draws. The last time it drifted into a similar pattern came in 1973-1974, when the sides played out four stalemates in a row. The rivalry is still fierce, but the goals have dried up.
Defensively, Juventus can point to a staggering run. They have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six Serie A meetings with Milan. The Rossoneri have never gone longer without scoring against any opponent in the competition’s history. For all Milan’s attacking evolution in recent years, this wall has not yet cracked.
Juve’s start to this season fits that theme. They opened with a 1-0 win, then a 2-0. Another clean sheet here would give them three shutouts from three to begin a campaign for only the second time in the last 10 seasons.
Milan chase a different kind of marker. Victory would hand them three straight wins to start a league season for the fourth time in the last seven years, a sign of how often they now launch campaigns at full throttle.
One more thread: Nico Gonzalez. The forward has enjoyed this fixture at home, with a goal and two assists across his last four home matches against Milan. In a game that has forgotten how to score, he has quietly found ways to tilt the balance.
Lazio’s flawless start under threat
Two games, two wins, two-goal margins, two clean sheets. Lazio have never opened a Serie A season like this. Even in eras when they chased titles, this kind of clean, controlled start eluded them.
Now they aim for three victories from three to begin a campaign, something they have managed only twice before: in 1974-1975 and 2012-2013. Each of those seasons carried its own sense of possibility. This one is still forming its identity.
Udinese, though, are awkward opponents. They have avoided defeat in eight of the last 10 league meetings with Lazio. They also travel well to this ground, leaving without a loss in 12 of their last 13 visits, with eight wins and four draws. Whatever Lazio’s form, Udinese tend to bend the script in this fixture.
Dovikas chasing Osimhen’s mark
Away from the headline clashes, Genoa’s meeting with Como offers a quieter subplot with a sharp edge. Tsous Dovikas has scored in five consecutive Serie A away games. One more, and he joins Victor Osimhen on a mark that still feels fresh in the memory.
Osimhen, now at Galatasaray after his Napoli spell, put together the same run in 2023. Matching that streak would push Dovikas into serious company and underline his growing status as one of the league’s most dangerous travellers.
