Shrewsbury Town Sign Leicester City Midfielder Michael Golding on Loan
Shrewsbury Town have turned to the Premier League conveyor belt again, landing Leicester City midfielder Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.
The 20-year-old arrives with a pedigree that belies his lack of senior minutes. Raised in Chelsea’s academy and schooled at Stamford Bridge, Golding climbed through the youth ranks before finally tasting first-team football as a substitute in an FA Cup tie in January 2024. One appearance, a brief glimpse, then the door closed.
Leicester opened another.
The Foxes paid about £4m for him in the summer of 2024, handing him what the club called a “long-term contract” and positioning him as one for the future. His debut came late in the 2024-25 campaign, a difficult backdrop as City slid out of the Premier League and into the Championship.
Now he drops into League One with something to prove.
For Shrewsbury, this is signing number nine of a busy window and a targeted move rather than a luxury. Golding has been brought in to help plug the hole left by Jack Price, sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury and leaving Town light in the middle of the pitch.
Head Coach's Thoughts
Head coach Gavin Cowan made no attempt to hide his satisfaction at getting the deal done.
“We're really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” he told BBC Radio Shropshire. “He's been on our radar for a while. He's a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”
A player eager to restart. A club needing drive and legs in midfield. The fit looks obvious; the test now comes on Saturday afternoons.
And Shrewsbury may not be finished.
BBC Radio Shropshire report that Town are close to securing another loan, this time for young Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown. Last season’s academy player of the year at Turf Moor, McMahon-Brown signed a two-year contract extension in the summer, a clear sign Burnley rate him highly. Behind the scenes there is a familiar link too: former Shrewsbury chief executive Matt Williams now operates as Burnley’s chief operating officer.
Golding through the door, McMahon-Brown possibly next. Shrewsbury’s squad is changing shape quickly. The question now is whether this injection of Premier League-bred youth can turn a busy window into a season that actually moves them up the table.
