St Johnstone Sign Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield with the signing of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City on a permanent deal.

The 21-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee and has agreed a contract that runs through to the summer of 2027, handing the Perth club a long-term option in the centre of the park.

Cotterill arrives with a solid grounding in senior football. A product of Swansea’s academy, he made his first-team debut for the Welsh club in 2022 before being sent out to learn the hard way in England’s lower leagues with Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

The real audition for this move, though, came last season.

Cotterill spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Dundee, gaining a first-hand feel for the Scottish Premiership. He featured 11 times in the league and found the net once, doing enough to convince St Johnstone that he was worth investing in rather than borrowing.

Speaking to the club’s media, the midfielder outlined exactly why the move appealed.

"I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club," Cotterill said. "I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play."

His footballing education at Swansea has clearly shaped his identity.

"Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball."

Those loan spells, he insists, have hardened him for what comes next.

"I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership.

It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge."

St Johnstone now have a young, ball-playing midfielder tied down for the next three seasons. How quickly Cotterill turns that promise into influence in Perth will shape more than just his own career.
