Strasbourg Names Hugo Oliveira Head Coach After Gary O'Neil's Departure
Strasbourg announced on Sunday that Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira will take over as head coach following the unexpected exit of Gary O'Neil last month.
O'Neil, an Englishman, left the Ligue 1 club to join Ipswich on June 26, just six months after arriving in France in January. The club has not revealed how long Oliveira's contract will last.
Oliveira, 47, arrives from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Famalicao, where he had his first role as a head coach. He expressed enthusiasm about joining Strasbourg, saying in a club statement, "It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project." He added, "I want to bring emotion, create memories and give the best of myself to help the club to develop."
Before stepping into a managerial role, Oliveira mostly worked as a goalkeeping coach with teams like Portugal’s national squad, Everton, and Fulham, often collaborating with Marco Silva at these English clubs.
In December 2024, he took charge of Famalicao, leading them to finish fifth in the Primeira Liga last season — their highest placement since returning to the top tier six years ago.
Gary O'Neil had steered Strasbourg to the semi-finals of the Conference League and secured eighth place in Ligue 1.
Strasbourg will begin their Ligue 1 campaign this season with a match against Marseille during the weekend of August 21-23.
