Sunderland Sign Experienced Defender Thomas Meunier

Sunderland have gone big on experience. Not on promise, not on potential, but on a defender who has seen almost everything the European game can throw at him.

Thomas Meunier, 34 years old and with more than 550 senior club appearances behind him, has signed a two-year deal with the Black Cats after leaving Lille. It is the club’s first signing of the season, and it is a statement.

A career built at the top

Meunier does not arrive as a gamble. His CV reads like a tour of European heavyweights: Club Brugge, Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor, and most recently Lille. At PSG he collected three league titles, patrolling the right flank in a team built to dominate.

He has also been a constant for Belgium, winning 83 caps and featuring at the 2026 World Cup. This is not a player learning the game. This is a player who has lived in its sharpest corners.

Sunderland’s director of football Florent Ghisolfi made no attempt to hide the club’s satisfaction at getting the deal over the line, stressing Meunier’s “wealth of experience, leadership and professionalism” and his quality “in both defensive and attacking phases of the game.” Sunderland are not just buying a right-back; they are buying a standard-setter.

A changing Sunderland squad

The move comes at a moment of transition. Forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil have both departed, leaving gaps in the dressing room and on the teamsheet. Meunier is the first piece of the rebuild, and he arrives with a clear brief: raise the level, on the pitch and in the training ground.

Ghisolfi underlined that Meunier “understands what it takes to compete for success” and backed his mentality to influence the squad. That line matters. Sunderland are not simply trying to survive; they are preparing to compete on multiple fronts.

Europe on the horizon

And that is where this deal really sharpens into focus. Sunderland are about to step back into European competition for the first time in 53 years. The club has waited more than half a century for another crack at the continent. Meunier has lived that life for the best part of a decade.

The Belgian will join up with the squad in early August, in time to fold into pre-season plans and the build-up to both domestic and European campaigns. For a side about to juggle league fixtures with midweek trips across the continent, a player who has navigated those rhythms with PSG, Dortmund and Lille is invaluable.

Meunier made no attempt to disguise his motivation. “I’m very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career,” he said, calling the Premier League “one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world” and a challenge he has long wanted to experience. The lure of England remains powerful, even for a veteran who has already played at the game’s highest levels.

But it was not just the league that drew him north. The club’s direction and its long-awaited European return carried weight. He spoke of being “impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward,” and admitted that competing in Europe was a “big factor” in his decision. For a player who has spent his career measuring himself against elite opponents, that matters.

“As a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies,” he said. That line will land well on Wearside, where the hunger for nights that matter has never really gone away.

Experience for the present, not just the past

There will be questions, of course. Any 34-year-old signing in the Premier League invites scrutiny over legs, intensity, and how much is left in the tank. Sunderland are betting that Meunier’s know-how, positional sense and delivery in both halves of the pitch will more than compensate.

He sees his role as broader than his own performance. “I hope I can bring my experience to the squad, both on and off the pitch,” he said. For a group about to step into unfamiliar European territory, that could be decisive.

Sunderland have waited 53 years to feel this stage again. Now they have added a defender who has spent his career living on it. The question is simple: how far can that mix of old scars and new ambition take them?
