Tottenham have been told in no uncertain terms: last season’s brush with disaster cannot happen again.
Gordon Strachan, who lived through the real thing under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes Roberto De Zerbi has the same hard edge – and that it will drag Spurs away from the chaos of their 2025/26 Premier League near-miss, when they escaped relegation on the final day barely a year after lifting the Europa League.
“I can’t see Spurs doing that again, I really can’t,” Strachan told Betway. “Not after spending that type of money, and not with the manager they’ve got, who's permanently angry – which is good.
“It’s like Sir Alex, he was permanently angry, as long as he’s got that drive to scare people into winning games of football and not getting beat.
“When I played with Sir Alex, it was not the fact that you had to win, you were just so scared of getting beat. So I think that’s what De Zerbi does to these teams a little bit.”
That fear factor is arriving at a club that has just spent big on flair.
Savio lands, and Spurs fans erupt
If last season ended in anxiety, this week has been about anticipation. The unveiling of Savio as Tottenham’s latest marquee signing has sent the club’s online channels into overdrive.
The Brazilian winger has joined for an initial £75 million, with a further £10m in add-ons – a statement fee for a club that only months ago were looking nervously over their shoulder at the bottom three.

There will be no long wait for a debut. Tottenham confirmed Savio’s signing in time to register him before the midday deadline, meaning De Zerbi can throw him straight into the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Championship side Charlton Athletic.

For Savio himself, the move has been a slow burn that finally caught fire.
“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” he said after the deal was confirmed. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
“As soon as I spoke to the Head Coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level, and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”
The winger is not just buying into the badge; he is buying into De Zerbi. At a club that only just avoided the unthinkable, that alignment between star signing and head coach matters.
From Savinho back to Savio – a return to roots
There is symbolism in the shirt as well as the fee.

“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Tottenham flirted with catastrophe last season. Now they have a permanently angry coach, a record signing with flair to burn, and a fanbase daring to believe again.
