Tottenham Targets Sandro Tonali with £72m Agreement
Tottenham are moving fast. Having stared down the barrel of relegation on the final day, they are now trying to rebuild their midfield around one of Europe’s most coveted playmakers.
According to multiple reports, Spurs have reached a £72m “total agreement” with Sandro Tonali over a six-year contract, with the Italy international ready to walk away from Newcastle United and anchor a new era in north London.
From survival scrap to statement signing
Tottenham ended their season clinging to safety, a tense 1-0 win over Everton just enough to keep them in the Premier League and send West Ham down instead. Two points separated Spurs from the drop. Two points between relief and disaster.
That brush with the Championship has clearly jolted the club into action.
Four deals are already in the bag. Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have arrived on free transfers from Burnley, Bournemouth and Liverpool, while Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has joined in a £52m move. It is a sweeping early reshuffle, but the real headline sits in midfield.
Tottenham want a new conductor. Tonali is at the top of the list.
Tonali pushes for Spurs move
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on Friday that Tonali has told Newcastle he wants the move to Tottenham this summer. The 24-year-old has signalled he is prepared to accept Spurs’ proposal, a package that would more than double his current salary at St James’ Park.
Newcastle, for their part, are holding a hard line on price. The Magpies are still asking for £100m for the Italian, a figure that underlines both his importance to Eddie Howe’s side and the financial muscle required to prise him away.
Yet the momentum is unmistakably shifting towards north London.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly framed Tottenham as the only serious player in this race. On his YouTube channel, he doubled down on his position, insisting that since he first broke “Sandro Tonali – Tottenham full stop” last week, he has not mentioned Manchester City or any other club in connection with the deal. In his words, the deal is “on” and Spurs are “working on the deal to sign Sandro Tonali”.
Schira: ‘Total agreement’ on £72m contract
In Italy, Nicolo Schira has gone a step further. The journalist reported that Tottenham are closing in, with Tonali having already given his “availability” to sign a contract with Spurs until 2032.
Schira had flagged that a new bid from Tottenham to Newcastle was imminent, with two other Premier League clubs watching from a distance. Spurs, he said, were pushing hardest.
Now, according to his latest update, Tonali and Tottenham have reached a “total agreement” on a deal worth £72m, leaving Spurs “confident” they can strike terms with Newcastle and finish the job.
A new spine, a new standard?
For a club that survived by the narrowest of margins, this is not just another transfer window. It is a reset.
Dubravka, Senesi, Robertson and van Hecke strengthen the spine. Tonali would redefine it. An Italy international in his prime, dictating tempo and dragging a fragile side into a different tier of ambition.
Tottenham have flirted with big rebuilds before. This time, after a season that almost ended in ruin, can they finally turn bold intent into a team that no longer lives on the edge?
