Tragic Death of Footballer Ebenezer Anning on N8 Highway

On an ordinary evening on the Assin Foso–Kumasi stretch of the N8 Highway, football lost one of its own.

Ebenezer Anning, a 22-year-old footballer, never made it home.

He had gone to visit a friend to watch a match, the kind of casual ritual that fuels the game’s heartbeat far from television cameras and packed stadiums. On his way back to Assin Dansame, as he tried to cross the road at Assin Asempanaye in the Assin North District of the Central Region, a speeding vehicle ended his life in an instant.

Police sources told the Ghana News Agency that Anning was struck by a Toyota Voxy with registration number GW 2890–26, travelling from Obuasi towards Mankessim. The impact left him with multiple severe injuries. He died on the spot.

The scene quickly shifted from the everyday hum of highway traffic to a grim tableau. Officers and bystanders could do little more than watch as his body was taken first to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital, then transferred to the New Edubiase Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Behind the wheel of the Toyota Voxy was Enock Nyarko. He did not flee for long. Nyarko later reported himself to the Assin Praso District Police Command, telling officers that Anning had suddenly crossed the road from his blind side.

One young footballer. One journey home. One moment on a busy Ghanaian highway that turned a routine night of watching the game into a tragedy the local football community will not forget.
