The opening week of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League wraps up on Thursday, and it does so with a heavyweight finish. Manchester United and Bayern Munich headline a slate that stretches from Eindhoven to Como, from European royalty to wide-eyed debutants chasing a once-in-a-generation night.
Here’s how Matchday 1 closes out – and where the edges lie.
PSV vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Firepower on Both Sides
PSV have been bullying the Eredivisie for a while now. On Thursday, they step onto home turf as clear favorites, but not against a soft touch.
Shakhtar Donetsk arrive as Ukrainian champions again, still operating under the shadow of a war that has forced them away from home for years. The model remains familiar: top local talent fused with a conveyor belt of Brazilian attackers. Six Brazilians are projected to start, including striker Kaua Elias, all under the watch of Arda Turan.
Both teams are missing pieces. PSV are without Mauro Junior, and Jerdy Schouten is a long-term absentee with a knee injury. Shakhtar travel without Marlon and several other first-choice options.
Peter Bosz has PSV playing front-foot football. Ivan Perisic brings experience and guile in midfield, while USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi leads the line. Another USMNT regular, Sergiño Dest, has committed to the project and remains first-choice at right-back.
Shakhtar won’t sit quietly. Their young Brazilian front line can hurt anyone in transition, and they will carry a threat if PSV’s press leaves gaps.
But in Eindhoven, with the stadium behind them and a sharper collective, PSV should edge a wild one.

Fenerbahce vs Roma: Big Spenders Meet a Rising Force
Two ambitious clubs collide in Istanbul. Fenerbahce are back in the Champions League and still spending like a superclub, while Roma return to the competition with a renewed edge under Gian Piero Gasperini.
Fenerbahce stumble into this one after a domestic setback, having lost to Besiktas at the weekend. They did, though, come through a tricky playoff tie against Lyon. Their squad screams intent: Mason Greenwood on the wing, Nathan Aké at centre-back, Ederson in goal, and Romelu Lukaku as a heavyweight option up front.
Roma arrive with momentum. Perfect in Serie A so far, they are built around the form of Dutch striker Donyell Malen, supplied by Paulo Dybala, the long-time heartbeat of the side, and teenage Portuguese talent Rodrigo Mora. Gasperini has given them structure and bite.
The atmosphere at Fenerbahce will be ferocious. That should be worth something. It feels enough to keep them from defeat, even if Roma’s ceiling looks higher over the long haul.

Sabah vs Manchester United: Carrick’s Chance to Breathe
Sabah step into the Champions League for the first time. An Azeri debutant, riding the wave of a long, twisting playoff run, now staring at Manchester United under the lights. For them, every point in this league phase is a bonus, a story to be told for years.
United see it differently. Michael Carrick’s side have only four points from their first three Premier League matches, and Europe might offer the reset they badly need.
Injuries complicate things. Marcus Rashford could miss out after limping off against Everton. Manuel Ugarte and Amad Diallo are also on the list of absentees. That opens the door for Benjamin Šeško to start up front.
United’s summer business hinted at a rebuild of the spine and midfield depth: Carlos Baleba from Brighton, Andrey Santos from Chelsea, and the versatile Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa all arrived to reshape the core.
Sabah, for their part, bring a cosmopolitan squad. The focus will fall on 20-year-old Nigerian winger Christian Nwachukwu and Rwandan striker Joy Lance Mickels, a seasoned forward who can punish any lapse.
They might find a goal. The gulf in quality, though, should still tell across 90 minutes. This is set up as United’s night to finally enjoy themselves again.

Bodo/Glimt vs Bayern Munich: Dark Horse Meets a Giant
No one underestimates Bodo/Glimt anymore. The Norwegian club have become Europe’s favorite dark horse, and their 6–5 aggregate win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the playoff round only reinforced that reputation.
They come into this tie deep into their domestic campaign. After 19 league games, they have 47 points and a +34 goal difference. This is not a rusty side easing its way into form. Patrick Berg anchors an XI that knows exactly what it is.
But they are not at full strength. Two starting midfielders, including Håkon Evjen, are out, and forward August Mikkelsen is also missing. Against Bayern Munich, those absences matter.
Bayern, under Vincent Kompany, remain the Bundesliga’s dominant force. The Champions League, though, is the obsession. They’ve doubled down on continuity this summer, trusting a veteran group led by Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Michael Olise in attack, with Alphonso Davies driving from the back.
This is a squad built to peak in Europe, not just at home. They know what is expected.
Bodo/Glimt can land punches, especially at home, but Bayern should start this campaign with a statement.

Slavia Praha vs RC Lens: A First Win in Sight
Slavia Praha are kings in Czechia but arrived in last season’s Champions League with a whimper. They were one of three teams to finish the League Phase without a single win, and that bruise still lingers.
They open this campaign at home against an RC Lens side that also lacks recent pedigree in Europe’s top competition. Lens have stumbled into this fixture on the back of consecutive Ligue 1 defeats and face the tricky task of juggling domestic pressure with the Champions League grind.
Slavia have their own problems. Lukas Provod, David Zima, and Tomas Holes are all out, stripping depth from key areas. Even so, they know this is the kind of match they must target.
Lens lean heavily on Florian Thauvin, their standout attacking midfielder and main creative spark. If Slavia can contain him, the French side may struggle to impose themselves.
With home advantage and the memory of last season’s failure still raw, Slavia have a clear opportunity to claim that elusive first win.

Como vs RB Leipzig: The Lake Hosts a Statement Game
The Champions League lands on the shores of Lake Como, and the hosts are not here to make up the numbers.
Como, guided by Cesc Fàbregas, share a philosophy with RB Leipzig: develop elite talent, sell smart, reinvest. But this is Como’s debut in the competition, and they have the stage to themselves.
The squad is laced with intrigue. In the No. 10 role, 22-year-old Nico Paz is seen as a potential heir to Lionel Messi for Argentina. On the flanks, Croatian international Martin Baturina and Senegal’s Assane Diao bring pace and invention. Moise Kean offers a muscular, mobile option at striker.
Leipzig, under former Argentina defender Martin Demichelis, arrive with their own exciting pieces. Morocco international Neil El Aynaoui and Norway’s Antonio Nusa feature in their preferred XI. Romulo and Christoph Baumgartner are out, but ex-Chelsea forward Marc Guiu has joined to bolster the attack.
Results in the Bundesliga have been mixed, and Leipzig don’t fully convince yet under Demichelis. Como, by contrast, have already shown they belong among Italy’s best and look ready to chase a Serie A title while shaking up Europe.
On a night like this, with history in the air and a sharp, confident side on the pitch, Como can turn debut nerves into a statement.
