Valverde Hospitalised After Training Clash with Tchouameni

Real Madrid’s week before El Clasico has taken a sharp, unwelcome twist.

Federico Valverde required hospital treatment on Thursday after a clash with team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni in the aftermath of training, according to multiple Spanish outlets. The Uruguay midfielder needed stitches for a facial wound and was taken to a nearby medical facility from Valdebebas, accompanied by youth coach Alvaro Arbeloa.

The incident did not come out of nowhere. Spanish reports say Valverde and Tchouameni had already argued during Wednesday’s session. The dispute spilled into Thursday, on the pitch and off it.

During training, Valverde is said to have refused Tchouameni’s offered handshake. Later in the session he reportedly fouled the France international, and the simmering tension finally snapped in the dressing room, where the physical altercation that left Valverde injured took place.

Marca, which first broke the story, reported that the cut on Valverde’s face was caused unintentionally and not by a direct punch from Tchouameni. The detail matters in a dressing room where lines between aggression and outright violence are fiercely policed.

Real Madrid declined to comment when contacted, as did representatives of both players. Silence, though, does little to cool the sense of a club on edge.

This is not the backdrop Carlo Ancelotti would have chosen for the most demanding week of the season.
