Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Training Incident
In Munich, Bayern were jolted on Friday by news that had nothing to do with tactics, selection, or form.
Head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing following a training session, the club confirmed, casting a shadow over a crucial stretch in the season.
The 40-year-old was watching his players during the session when the incident occurred. Bayern moved quickly, sending him for immediate medical attention and placing him under observation.
“Kompany will undergo comprehensive examinations at the hospital and remain under medical care,” the club said in a statement. His coaching staff will run training and handle match preparation while he recovers.
Sport director Max Eberl underlined that football now takes a clear back seat.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Eberl said. “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly. Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.”
The scare comes at the end of a week in which Kompany’s condition had already raised concern. Bayern had previously revealed he was suffering from a viral infection that kept him away from a training session and a press conference on Tuesday. He returned to the touchline on Wednesday for the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League, pushing himself back into the technical area for a high-intensity European night.
After that match, Kompany admitted he had tried to battle through the illness and had ignored warning signs from his body. Two days later, those warnings could no longer be brushed aside.
Bayern’s next fixture is on Sunday against Freiburg in the Bundesliga. The club has not put any timeline on Kompany’s return. The result there will matter, as it always does in Munich, but for once it is not the only thing people around Bayern are waiting to hear.
