“I'm not sure they would have needed him, but there would definitely be interest from other Premier League clubs. But yeah, I think if [Diego] Simeone is that strong on keeping him, I'm sure he'll stay for another year at least.”
That’s the tension around Alvarez in a sentence. Good enough to start for a top side. Industrious enough to fit almost any system. Yet for Arsenal, already stocked with versatile forwards, he looks more like a luxury than a necessity.
Barcelona are lurking too. Short of a true central striker and operating under familiar financial strain, they have been tracking Alvarez as a possible solution. Their lack of spending power could open a narrow window for English clubs, but any move would still have to get past Simeone, who has made his stance clear: he wants Alvarez to stay.
While the forward ponders his future, Arsenal are already up and running. The Gunners opened the defence of their Premier League crown with a comfortable win over Coventry to start the 2026-27 campaign, a reminder that this is a squad operating from a position of strength, not desperation.
