Virgil van Dijk's Strong Stance on Cody Gakpo's Future
Virgil van Dijk has drawn a firm line in the sand over Cody Gakpo’s future – and it doesn’t point towards Manchester.
With Manchester City pushing to land the Dutch forward before the transfer window shuts, Liverpool’s captain made it abundantly clear where he stands after the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Nottingham.
Asked if he wanted Gakpo to stay, Van Dijk shot back: “What do you think? He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”
City are in active talks over a deal worth around £80 million, with The Athletic reporting that Pep Guardiola’s side have become Gakpo’s preferred destination after Tottenham Hotspur also showed interest. The chase is real, the numbers are serious, and the clock is ticking.
Liverpool, though, are not in the mood to be bullied by the calendar. Bradley Barcola is undergoing his medical ahead of a move from Paris Saint-Germain, but even with the French winger on the way, the club will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless another wide forward is secured first. No replacement, no deal.
For Van Dijk, the issue runs deeper than tactics and transfer fees.
“We'll see what the next few days bring,” he said. “I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us.”
That “us” matters. Liverpool are openly in a transitional phase, reshaping the squad while trying to stay in the fight at the top. Losing a versatile, goal-threatening forward to a direct rival at this stage would cut right across that process.
At least one reinforcement is already on the way. Van Dijk could barely hide his excitement about Barcola’s imminent arrival and what it says about Liverpool’s pulling power.
“He's a good player, and he has pace,” the defender said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms.”
The message behind those words was just as pointed as his comments on Gakpo. Liverpool, Van Dijk insisted, remain a destination for elite talent.
“I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't.”
That is the challenge laid down to current squad members and potential signings alike. Buy in, or move on.
For now, Van Dijk wants the club to add, not subtract.
“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference,” he stressed. “We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
The window will close, the speculation will stop, and the season will harden into shape. By then, the only question that will matter at Anfield is this: will Cody Gakpo still be fighting that battle in red, or lining up for the champions they are trying to catch?
