Watford Captain Mattie Pollock Calls for Team Unity

Watford captain Mattie Pollock has issued a rallying call for unity after the club’s winless run stretched to five games in all competitions and dragged them down the early Championship table.

The Hornets slipped to 18th after Saturday’s narrow defeat at West Brom, another frustrating afternoon that underlined how quickly the optimism of opening day has drained away.

“We’ve got to stick together”

Pollock, handed the armband in July, didn’t hide from the situation but pushed the message of togetherness.

He told BBC Three Counties Radio that the squad “need to stick together as a team” and stressed that he will “do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together”.

Watford’s season had started with a statement win over Southampton, a performance that hinted at a side ready to muscle in near the top. Since then, the momentum has stalled: two draws and two defeats from their next four league fixtures, plus a bruising 5-1 loss to Peterborough in the EFL Cup with a much-changed line-up.

The numbers are already uncomfortable. The mood, Pollock knows, could follow if it’s not handled carefully.

Two home games, huge stakes

Now comes a pivotal week at Vicarage Road.

Alessio Dionisi’s side host Preston on Tuesday night before Stoke City arrive on Saturday, a double-header that feels far bigger than the calendar suggests this early in the 2026-27 campaign.

“They’re two massive games,” Pollock said. “We’ve come up short in the last two away games, so we’ve got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us.”

That is the crux of it. Home form, and home feeling.

Watford have been searching for a spark since that opening-day surge against Southampton. The captain is convinced it is still there, buried beneath missed chances and narrow defeats.

“We came up short at the weekend,” he admitted, but added that “if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season.”

Two games at home. A team under early pressure. A new captain demanding unity. Watford’s response over the next few days will say plenty about where this season is really heading.
