When Did Arsenal Last Win the Premier League? A Look Back at the Invincibles and Beyond
Arsenal finally broke their long wait for a 14th league title after more than two decades. Following three straight seasons finishing second, Mikel Arteta's squad clinched the championship once Manchester City drew 1-1 against Bournemouth on May 19.
The Gunners led most of the 2022/23 season but stumbled near the end, finishing five points behind a dominant City team that won a historic treble. After investing heavily in new talent during the offseason, Arsenal pushed hard in 2023/24 and kept the title race alive until the last day, again battling City.
It seemed like 2024/25 might be their year as City struggled, but Liverpool surged ahead to claim the crown while Arsenal couldn't maintain their momentum. This time, though, Arsenal succeeded. Even if it felt tough at moments, no one in North London will mind the struggle now.
Looking Back: The Last Time Arsenal Won the Premier League
The previous league triumph came 22 years before the 2025/26 victory. In the 2003/04 season, Arsenal made history by becoming the only team to complete a 38-game Premier League season unbeaten, earning 90 points.
This squad earned the nickname 'The Invincibles' and is often regarded as one of the best teams ever, guided by legendary manager Arsene Wenger. They secured key wins including a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield and twice defeating London rivals Chelsea, their closest challengers.
One memorable moment from that campaign was the infamous 0-0 draw at Manchester United, known as the 'Battle of Old Trafford' in September 2003. The match was filled with tension and multiple scuffles. Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira was sent off with 13 minutes left, and United’s Ruud Van Nistelrooy missed a late penalty. Martin Keown celebrated wildly in front of Van Nistelrooy, sparking a melee after the final whistle.
Afterwards, six Arsenal players and two United players were charged with misconduct by the FA. This game marked a turning point as United's dominance waned and Arsenal maintained their unbeaten streak, while United finished third that season. From then on, Wenger’s team never looked back.
How Has Arsenal Performed Since the Invincibles?
Between 2004/05 and 2015/16, Arsenal consistently finished in the top four and qualified for the Champions League under Wenger but seldom mounted serious title challenges. Their recent resurgence has brought them back into the conversation for European football’s elite.
