William Saliba Set for Back Surgery: Lengthy Absence Ahead

Arsenal have been dealt a brutal blow: William Saliba is set for back surgery and is expected to be out for four to five months, according to reports from L'Équipe and The Athletic.

The France defender, a pillar of Mikel Arteta’s back line, was forced off in the Euro semi-final against Spain after his back problems flared up again. It was not a precaution. It was the breaking point.

French journalist Julien Laurens reported that Saliba, in the midst of the pain, told those around him that his back was “completely done for”. Before that, he had allegedly been playing through the tournament on strong painkillers, pushing his body through a level of discomfort that would have sidelined most players.

Now comes the inevitable consequence. Surgery, then a long road back.

A four to five month lay-off would rule Saliba out for the remainder of the calendar year, meaning Arsenal are unlikely to see him in competitive action again until 2027. For a team built on the stability he brings at the heart of defence, that is a seismic absence.
