World Cup 2026 Group B Preview: Switzerland Favored, Canada and Others Aim to Advance

Switzerland enter the 2026 World Cup with a history of stronger performances compared to their group rivals. They are joined by Canada, co-hosts looking to advance beyond the group stage for the first time, as well as Qatar and Bosnia & Herzegovina, both on their second appearance in the tournament.

The Swiss have reached the knockout rounds multiple times, with quarter-final finishes in 1934, 1938, and 1954. Led by coach Murat Yakin, they boast a solid squad expected to cruise past the less experienced teams in their group before facing tougher opponents.

Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia & Herzegovina share the objective of advancing from the group. The expanded format of 48 teams allows eight of the twelve third-place finishers to progress, offering hope to those teams aiming for the knockout stage.

Canada

Co-hosting the event alongside Mexico and the United States, Canada return to the World Cup for the third time. Manager Jesse Marsch calls his 26-man squad the best ever assembled for Canada, with hopes high to reach the round of 32 for the first time.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies stands out as the team’s star but is uncertain for the opener against Bosnia due to a hamstring injury. Canada qualified automatically as hosts but will aim to improve significantly on their 2022 performance where they lost all three games.

Key players: Alphonso Davies (left-back, Bayern Munich), Niko Sigur (versatile defender/midfielder).

Fifa ranking: 30Odds to win: 200/1

Bosnia & Herzegovina

Returning after a 12-year absence, Bosnia secured their spot through European playoffs. Veteran forward Edin Dzeko leads the team at age 40, bringing experience from the 2014 World Cup. Midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic is an emerging talent with key contributions in qualification.

Coach Sergej Barbarez will rely on a mix of seasoned players and young prospects as the team looks to upset expectations.

Fifa ranking: 65Odds to win: 500/1

Qatar

Having debuted as hosts in 2022, Qatar qualified for this tournament through competitive Asian qualifiers. Under Julen Lopetegui, the team employs a flexible 4-4-2 formation, though preparation has been disrupted by cancellations of friendlies. Recent form is poor, with just one win in twelve matches.

Players like Akram Afif and all-time top scorer Almoez Ali will need to step up. Young midfielder Mohamed Mannai offers promise with his versatility.

Fifa ranking: 55Odds to win: 2000/1

Switzerland

Switzerland bring World Cup experience unmatched by their group opponents, marking their 13th overall and sixth consecutive appearance. They topped their European qualifying group undefeated, conceding only twice.

Coach Murat Yakin aims for the best Swiss World Cup showing yet. His preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with adaptability to a 3-4-3, supports a balanced lineup featuring both youth and experience.

Key players: Remo Freuler, a hardworking midfielder excelling in defense; Dan Ndoye, who shone during qualification and may breakout further in the tournament.

Fifa ranking: 19Odds to win: 80/1

Group B Outlook

Switzerland seem poised to top the group easily, likely winning all their matches. Canada benefits from not facing Switzerland until the final group game, giving them a slight edge over Qatar and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Both those teams might challenge strongly, making it possible that one could advance instead of Canada.
