WTA Top 10 Updates After China Open: Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva Shift Rankings

The conclusion of the China Open in Beijing brought a fresh look to the WTA top 10 rankings. Qinwen Zheng, the local favorite and wildcard entry, captured the title after defeating Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the final. The fourth-seeded Russian put up a strong fight but Zheng’s breakthrough run, cheered on by passionate fans, lasted one hour and 42 minutes.

Zheng's victory propelled her upward in the rankings alongside runner-up Andreeva. In contrast, American players Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula saw their rankings dip slightly in the latest update.

Ranking Changes Among Top Players

Elena Rybakina, who recently claimed the world number one spot, lost her opening match in Beijing but held onto the top ranking. Aryna Sabalenka also kept her second place despite an early exit. Behind them, Mirra Andreeva climbed two spots to reach a career-high world number three, surpassing both Pegula and Gauff, who dropped one place each to fourth and fifth.

Further down the list, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova each moved up one rank to sixth and seventh. Linda Noskova slipped two places to eighth, while Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk remained ninth and tenth respectively.

Withdrawals Ahead of Wuhan Open

As the tennis calendar moves forward to the Wuhan Open, several top players will be missing. Both finalists from the China Open, Zheng and Andreeva, have withdrawn. Zheng cited a right shoulder injury as her reason, while Andreeva mentioned a schedule change. Their absences add to a growing list of notable withdrawals including world number one Rybakina, defending champion Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Anisimova.

Aryna Sabalenka leads the field as the top seed in Wuhan, followed by Jessica Pegula. This event is set to be the last WTA 1000 tournament of the season.
