WWE Officials See Turki Alalshikh's Canelo Comment as a Shot at TKO Amid Saudi Crown Jewel Concerns
Just weeks before the planned Crown Jewel event, WWE executives are reconsidering their plans due to growing safety worries in Saudi Arabia. This partnership has brought WWE its highest earnings ever but also stirred significant complications.
Turki Alalshikh’s Remark Seen as a Critique of TKO Leadership
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shared that many WWE insiders viewed Turki Alalshikh's recent statement about Canelo Alvarez as a subtle jab at them. WWE remains uncertain about traveling to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel amid regional tensions.
Meltzer said, "In WWE, when that tweet came out, I mean they knew it was a message for them too. This is obviously going to be Ari Emanuel's decision. This is way over Nick Khan's head. I'm sure it won't be without Nick Khan's input."
The final call on proceeding with the event lies with TKO President Ari Emanuel, who will likely consult senior officials like Nick Khan.
Context Behind Alalshikh's Tweet and WWE's Reaction
Just days earlier, Turki Alalshikh took to X to assure that the Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli fight would go ahead despite concerns. He praised Canelo for his loyalty during difficult times facing the Saudi regime:
"Canelo reached out and told me he'll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens. He fears nothing. My country is home to the two Holy Mosques, land of peace, safety, rich civilisation, deep history, and kind-hearted people. Thank you to everyone who checked in and showed support. Hard times reveal true friends."
Notably, WWE began airing Crown Jewel promotional content on Monday Night RAW shortly after Alalshikh’s pointed message, hinting at ongoing efforts to push forward despite the unease.
Past Challenges Highlight Ongoing Struggles
This isn’t WWE’s first rough patch with Saudi Arabia. In 2018, several companies pulled out from deals amid controversy, yet WWE pressed ahead with Crown Jewel. Vince McMahon deflected criticism by bringing Hulk Hogan back after a long absence, turning attention away from the backlash.
Currently, WWE promoting Crown Jewel does not guarantee the event will happen. TKO officials continue to closely watch developments before confirming their plans.
