York City’s Promotion Parade Set for Celebration

York will get its party after all.

York City’s long-awaited promotion parade has been cleared to go ahead on Thursday evening, after an initial safety veto from North Yorkshire Police threatened to leave the city celebrating behind closed doors.

Luke Charters, MP for York Outer, hailed the U-turn as “fantastic news” and said “common sense has prevailed” after days of uncertainty over whether the Minstermen’s open-top bus tour could take place.

This is no ordinary lap of honour. York are back in the Football League after a “brilliant season” and a “historic return”, and the city has been itching for a moment to mark it properly.

Charters was one of the most vocal public figures pushing for the parade once the original plans were knocked back on safety grounds. He has been working with the club and local partners to get the event over the line, and he made no attempt to hide his relief.

“After such a brilliant season and a historic return to the Football League, it’s absolutely right that the players, staff and supporters get the chance to celebrate together properly,” he said, welcoming the announcement.

He added that since promotion was sealed, he had been alongside the club trying to make sure the celebration could happen, praising how “everyone has pulled together to deliver a real moment for the city.”

York, he pointed out, has “been behind this team every step of the way this season,” and Thursday night “is going to be a special occasion.” He plans to be in the thick of it, saying he is looking forward to celebrating with supporters across the city.

The Route To Celebration

Hundreds of fans are expected to line the streets as the bus winds its way through the centre.

The open-top bus will roll out from outside York Art Gallery in St Leonards Place at 7pm, before making a slow, celebratory journey through the city. The players and staff are due to arrive at the Eye of York between 7.45pm and 8pm, where the evening’s focal point awaits.

The route reads like a tour of central York: Museum Street, Station Road, Rougier Street, George Hudson Street and Clifford Street all set to be drenched in club colours and noise as the Minstermen show off the trophy of their season’s work.

City of York Council has urged supporters to think carefully about how they travel in. With road closures in place along the parade route, officials are “strongly advising” people not to drive into the city centre.

The message is clear: walk if you can, and watch as close to home as possible. That should ease congestion and help the event run safely, without dulling the atmosphere.

For those who do need to drive, parking will still be available at car parks around the city. St George’s Field Car Park will serve those heading for the Eye of York, while Castle Car Park will be open only to blue badge holders.

Strict Safety Rules

The council is also drawing a firm line on behaviour along the route.

Flares, pyrotechnics and anything similar are “strictly prohibited” because they pose a risk of injury and serious health issues in crowded spaces. Drones are also banned; any unauthorised devices spotted above the parade will be removed, the council warned.

York has its celebration back. The bus is booked, the route is set, and the city is ready to salute a team that has finally dragged itself back into the Football League. Now it’s over to the fans to turn Thursday night into the kind of noise and colour the players will never forget.
