Zamalek Grinds Past Abu Qir to Top the Egyptian Premier League
Zamalek did not dazzle. They did something just as important on a tense Tuesday night at Cairo Stadium: they won, and they climbed, at least for the moment, to the summit of the Egyptian Premier League.
A 2-0 scoreline against newly promoted Abu Qir Fertilizers sounds routine. It was anything but. The champions spent long spells without the ball, were outshot, and needed a goal-line rescue to preserve their lead. Yet when it mattered, their quality and composure told.
Ismail’s early thunderbolt
The breakthrough arrived early and emphatically. On 17 minutes, chaos in the Abu Qir box turned into a moment of pure technique.
Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abdel Rahim "Genesh" rushed out to confront Mahmoud Bentayg, leaving his goal exposed. The loose ball dropped to Mohamed Ismail on the edge of the scene. One clean, vicious swing of his right foot and the volley screamed into the unguarded net. No second invitation required.
That strike settled Zamalek’s nerves but did not subdue the visitors. Abu Qir, unfazed by the champions’ pedigree, pushed forward and began to dictate the rhythm. They finished with 53% possession and 13 attempts to Zamalek’s 8, numbers that underline how bravely they approached the night.

Sherif closes the door
Abu Qir kept swinging, but their resistance finally cracked at the other end, just as the clock ticked towards full time.
With three minutes of normal time remaining, substitute Ahmed Sherif ghosted into the penalty area, unnoticed. One clever run, one delicate finish. He lifted the ball over the onrushing Genesh, killing off the contest and sealing the points.

Champions edge ahead in crowded race
The victory moves Zamalek to 10 points, top of the table for now after four rounds. Their lead over Pyramids, Al-Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra is just a single point, and both the Sky Blues and the Reds still hold a game in hand after playing only three matches.
It is Zamalek’s third win of the campaign, adding Abu Qir to a list that already includes Al-Bank Al-Ahly and Suez Petrojet. The only blemish so far remains the opening-day draw with Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandary.
Abu Qir Fertilizers, in contrast, leave Cairo with nothing but a performance to cling to. They stay stuck on 3 points, down in 15th place, and this defeat marks their third loss on the bounce. Encouraging signs, no reward.
For Zamalek, the schedule tightens quickly. They travel to face Djibouti's Port on Saturday in the second leg of the African Champions League preliminary round, then head to Ghazl El Mahalla on 16 September for their next league assignment.
