2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Updated Round of 32 Bracket, Schedule, and Qualified Teams

The 2026 World Cup is progressing rapidly, and it’s time to focus on the knockout rounds. Both co-hosts, Mexico and the United States, have already secured their places in the Round of 32 by winning their initial matches. As the group stage continues, more teams will advance to this elimination phase.

Once the knockout stage begins, every match becomes do-or-die. Unlike the group stage where each team plays multiple games, here a single loss means elimination. The winners keep advancing until a champion is crowned.

Third-Place Qualifiers

Besides the top two teams from each group, eight of the twelve third-place finishers will also move on to the knockouts, ranked based on points and goal difference. These spots are still undecided.

How the Knockout Rounds Work

Starting with the Round of 32, matches are single elimination. No points or draws can carry a team forward—only wins count. If a game ends tied after regular time, it goes into 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, penalty shootouts decide which team advances.

Matchups for Qualified Teams

Mexico secured the top spot in Group A after beating South Korea and will face a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in their first knockout match. Meanwhile, the United States topped Group D for the third time ever and will meet a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 3.

Tiebreakers in Group Stage

If teams tie on points, the following criteria decide standings:

  • Goal differential
  • Total goals scored
  • Head-to-head points
  • Head-to-head goal difference
  • Head-to-head goals scored
  • Team conduct score (penalty cards)
  • FIFA Men’s World Ranking

Upcoming Knockout Stage Schedule

Winners will progress to the Round of 16 beginning July 4, followed by quarterfinals, semifinals, the third-place match, and the final on July 19.

What to Watch Next

More teams will secure their spots as group play wraps up. Each knockout match could mark the end of a country's tournament run, making every game intense and unpredictable. Keep an eye on the evolving bracket and rooting for your favorite squads.
