The 2026 World Cup is progressing fast, and the knockout rounds are beginning to take shape. Co-hosts Mexico and the United States were the first to secure their spots in the Round of 32, with several other teams soon to follow. The knockout phase is where every match matters; one loss means elimination.

Teams Already Qualified for Round of 32

Mexico topped Group A after winning its first two matches, including a crucial victory over South Korea. They will face a third-place team from Group C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32. The United States won Group D, marking their third time finishing first in the group stage and first since 2010. The USMNT will play a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 3.

Germany became the first non-North American team to advance by clinching Group E with a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Ivory Coast. They will meet a third-place finisher from Group A, B, C, D, or F.

Argentina qualified by defeating Austria, highlighted by Lionel Messi scoring twice and becoming the World Cup's all-time leading scorer. They secured first place after Algeria beat Jordan.

France advanced after a 3-0 win over Iraq, powered by two goals from Kylian Mbappe. Their group victory depends on the final matchday against Norway, who also qualified following a 3-2 win over Senegal thanks to Erling Haaland’s two goals. France and Norway will decide the group winner when they meet on June 26.

Colombia reached the knockouts after Luis Diaz scored late against DR Congo, holding on despite heavy pressure. They could be a surprise contender as the tournament progresses.

How the Knockout Bracket Works

The Round of 32 starts the single-elimination phase. Matches cannot end in a draw. If tied after 90 minutes, extra time of 30 minutes is played. Should the score remain level, a penalty shootout decides the winner.

Group winners face runners-up or top third-place teams from other groups, with specific pairings set ahead of time. Third-place teams are ranked based on points and goal difference, and the top eight among the twelve third-place finishers advance.

Tiebreakers in Group Stages

If teams are tied on points, the following steps determine standings:

  • Points in head-to-head matches
  • Goal difference in head-to-head matches
  • Goals scored in head-to-head matches
  • Overall goal difference
  • Total goals scored
  • Disciplinary record (team conduct score)
  • FIFA Men’s World Ranking

Round of 16 matches run from July 4 to 7, followed by quarterfinals on July 9 and 10. Semifinals take place July 12 and 13. The third-place playoff is scheduled for July 18, with the final on July 19.
