2026 World Cup Prize Money: Team Earnings and Player Shares Explained
FIFA has set aside a total of $655 million in prize money for the 2026 World Cup hosted across North America. This sum is a dramatic jump of $215 million compared to the 2022 tournament in Qatar, which itself saw a $40 million increase over 2018. Back in 2014, the total prize fund was $358 million at Brazil's World Cup. The growth in prize money has been steady with each new edition.
Record-Breaking Winner’s Prize
The champions of the 2026 World Cup will take home a historic $50 million, confirmed by FIFA in December 2025. That figure surpasses the $42 million awarded in 2022 by $8 million. Before 2006, the winning teams never earned more than $10 million. For example, Italy received only $2.2 million after winning in 1982. The boost in payouts followed increased revenue and pressure from national associations starting around 2002.
Prize Money Breakdown by Stage in 2026
Every nation that made it to the 2026 World Cup walked away with substantial prize money. Just qualifying earned each team $1.5 million. Moving beyond the group stage increased those earnings significantly.
How Players Benefit Financially
Players receive a share of the prize money based on how far their team progresses. The exact amount can vary between countries and individual contracts, but every player gets a cut of the team’s earnings. FIFA leaves it to each federation to decide the split.
In 2006, Germany promised nearly $400,000 per player if they won on home soil. In 2022, Australia reportedly paid players AU$226,000 each plus an additional $290,000 bonus for reaching the knockout rounds.
After the 2026 tournament, Team USA made headlines for sharing their earnings equally between their men’s and women’s teams.
Comparing Men’s and Women’s World Cup Prize Money
Prize money for the 2027 Women’s World Cup remains undisclosed. In 2023, FIFA offered $110 million in total prize money for the Women’s tournament, about one-sixth of the men’s 2026 pool. This was still a big rise from $30 million in 2019. The numbers for the women’s game seem poised to grow steadily as well.
