2026 World Cup: Scores, Schedule, Groups and Viewing Information

The qualifying playoffs have wrapped up, revealing the complete list of 48 teams competing in this summer's World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicked off with the official group draw in December, assigning 42 teams to their groups while six spots were reserved for playoff winners.

The United States, as an automatic qualifier and host, was placed in Group D. Their campaign began on June 12 with a victory against Paraguay. They will face Australia next and wrap up group play versus Türkiye.

Canada, in Group B, opened with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Upcoming matches include games against Qatar and Switzerland. Meanwhile, Mexico had the honor of hosting the opening match, defeating South Africa 2-0 at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Their group opponents also include Korea Republic and Czechia.

Qualified Teams by Confederation

  • AFC: Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Iraq
  • CAF: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, DR Congo
  • CONCACAF: United States, Canada, Mexico, Curaçao, Haiti, Panama

Tournament Format

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each squad plays three group matches. The top two teams from each group automatically advance to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-place finishers, making 32 teams in total.

Tiebreakers follow this sequence: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play record, and if needed, drawing lots. FIFA introduced a new bracket system to keep the highest-ranked teams apart until the semifinals. For example, top-ranked Spain and defending champions Argentina were placed on opposite sides of the bracket, as were third-ranked France and fourth-ranked England.

Teams from the same confederation generally cannot be in the same group, except European teams who may share a group.
