For the first time, finishing third in a group at the World Cup doesn't mean elimination. How Third-Place Rankings Are Decided

Third-place teams are ranked against each other rather than their own group. FIFA ranks them using:

  • Points earned in all three group matches
  • Goal difference from all group games
  • Total goals scored
  • Disciplinary record (fewer yellow and red cards is better)
  • FIFA world ranking as a last resort

The current table shows how tight it is: Czechia holds the eighth qualifying spot over Ecuador only by goals scored, with both on one point and a -1 goal difference. If they remain tied after the final round, fair play points and then FIFA rankings will decide who advances. Notably, FIFA has removed drawing of lots for this edition, making rankings the ultimate tiebreaker.

The expanded 48-team tournament introduces a Round of 32 for the first time, leading into the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
