The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is coming to an end. For the first time, the tournament will include a round of 32 teams, rather than 16. Alongside the usual group winners and runners-up, the top eight third-placed teams across all groups will also advance, making the knockout picture more complex than ever before.

Ranking of Third-Placed Teams

The ranking of third-placed sides is primarily based on points earned during their group matches. If teams are tied, the following tiebreakers apply:

  • Goal difference
  • Goals scored
  • Fair play points (deducting for yellow and red cards)
  • FIFA World Ranking if still tied

Possible Round-of-32 Match-Ups and Germany’s Prospects

With 495 possible combinations determining which eight third-placed teams qualify, FIFA uses a computer program to handle all scenarios and avoid early rematches from the group stage. The official bracket thus includes several potential opponents for each third-placed team.

Germany will face one of the third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, or F. Statistically, they are more likely to encounter the third-placed team from Group C or D than from A, B, or F.
