Al-Nassr's Heavy Defeat: Postecoglou Defends Ronaldo

Al-Nassr’s 4-0 collapse against Al Ain on Tuesday did more than dent their AFC Champions League Elite campaign. It cut straight into the aura that has surrounded the Saudi Pro League champions since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival.

For Ronaldo, it was the heaviest defeat of his Al-Nassr career. For the club, it was a night that triggered instant questions about their readiness, their mentality, and whether their talisman still lifts them when it matters most.

Those questions reached the press room. That is where the temperature really spiked.

Postecoglou bristles at Ronaldo criticism

When a reporter suggested Al-Nassr had not prepared properly and claimed Ronaldo “did not help” the team, manager Postecoglou’s mood snapped.

He did not dodge responsibility. He grabbed it.

“You say we didn't prepare well, but you were there,” he said, as quoted by ESPN. “So you're not saying the truth. Be honest. It's my responsibility. Maybe I haven't done my job well. That's fine. But please don't talk about preparation.”

The Australian made it clear he would absorb the blame for the performance. He would not, though, accept what he viewed as lazy shots at his players’ professionalism.

The criticism aimed at Ronaldo in particular struck a nerve. Claims that the Portugal legend contributed “nothing” in the defeat were too much for Postecoglou.

“Cristiano has scored three goals already,” he pointed out. Ronaldo, he reminded the room, had done that despite a limited pre-season. Match sharpness was still building. The goals were still coming.

“This is not about the players. The players are giving everything. They're top players, and they've got great character. The responsibility is mine, okay?” he continued. “But you shouldn't say that about somebody who is still setting an example for everyone.

“And you should be careful when you say things like that about people who have built a career on making all the sacrifices to keep playing. Like I said, you can criticise me, no problem. That's okay. Did he not score in three games? Did he not have chances today?”

On the pitch, Al-Nassr had been outplayed and outgunned. Off it, their manager drew a line in the sand, shielding his dressing room and his star.

The scoreboard leaves no room for debate. The response inside that dressing room, and from Ronaldo himself, will decide whether this is just a brutal one-off or the night their season’s foundations start to crack.
