Alan Shearer Backs Arsenal to Sign Julian Alvarez to Strengthen Title Chances
Alan Shearer believes Arsenal have a golden chance to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez before the transfer window closes. The forward is reportedly unsettled at Atletico and has shown interest in moving to Barcelona. Shearer suggests that Arsenal could swoop in and secure the player, boosting their chances of maintaining Premier League dominance.
Opportunity to Make a Move
Shearer points out that while Alvarez initially favored joining Barcelona, Atletico Madrid are hesitant to sell a key player to a Spanish rival. This reluctance may open the door for Arsenal to step in and complete the deal. The Gunners are searching for attacking options following a mixed season from Viktor Gyokeres, who joined for £64m. There are reports Alvarez has softened his stance about moving to London rather than Camp Nou, which could work in Arsenal's favor.
Shearer Predicts Title Impact
"We’ve heard of a lot of pushing from Barcelona and the reluctance from Atletico," Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast. "It seems like their thinking might be, ‘If we have to sell, we’re not selling to you [Barca].’ There’s maybe a small window for Arsenal to nab him. And if they do, it’s done by the way [the Premier League title race]."
Hostile Atmosphere at Atletico
The situation worsened when Alvarez was jeered by Atletico fans during their recent draw with Villarreal. Supporters are unhappy with his desire to join Barcelona, making his position at the club tense. Since arriving from Manchester City for £82m, Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances across two seasons. Despite winning two league titles in England, his progress was limited by Erling Haaland's presence at City.
Other Voices Back Arsenal’s Move
Micah Richards also encouraged Arsenal to test Atletico's willingness to sell: "I would actually go for a striker if I was Arsenal. We’ve all seen the situation with Alvarez at Atletico. He was booed by his own fans recently and reportedly wants to go to Barcelona. But will Atletico sell to Barca? It might be an opportunity for Arsenal to sneak in with a bid. He’s clearly unhappy. If Arsenal had Alvarez, he’d take them to the next level."
Arsenal’s Next Step
With Alvarez unsettled, Arsenal could find a quick solution by making a formal offer. The team is riding high after winning the Premier League last season for the first time since 2004 and reaching the Champions League final. Adding a proven winner like Alvarez would increase their threat domestically. Mikel Arteta’s squad started their title defense strongly with a 3-0 win over promoted Coventry City. Securing Alvarez before the deadline would be a significant boost.
