Alejandro Balde's Barcelona Future Uncertain Amid Exit Rumors

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread after the left-back was left out of the squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, the clearest sign yet that an exit is close.

The omission comes at the end of a turbulent 48 hours at the club. On Saturday, Jijantes sent a jolt through the fanbase by reporting that Balde had decided to leave his boyhood side, a move that would have been unthinkable not long ago for a defender branded one of La Masia’s brightest products.

That report dropped just days after his agent, Jorge Mendes, met with Barcelona’s sporting director on Thursday, and only hours after Hansi Flick publicly questioned the 22-year-old’s conviction in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it’s important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players,” the German coach said when asked directly about Balde.

Flick didn’t stop there. “Every day I see what the players do – the level – and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent.”

Those words sounded like a challenge. Or a warning.

By Saturday evening, the narrative twisted again. Mundo Deportivo reported that Balde had actually taken Flick’s comments as a spur, not a slight, and was prepared to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place. The message from the player’s side was clear: he wants to compete, but if the club no longer sees him as part of the project, he will accept a move.

Now, with his name missing from the list for Elche, the situation looks brutally simple. If this is not the beginning of the end, it certainly feels like the warm-up act.

Balde will not be short of offers. As a La Masia graduate and former Spain international, still with plenty of time to force his way back into Luis de la Fuente’s plans, he has long been on the radar of Premier League clubs. The profile is exactly what English sides pay for: young, quick, technically secure, and already hardened by the demands of Barcelona.

Right now, Manchester United appear best positioned to pounce. Their need is obvious. A 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their league opener on Saturday underlined just how fragile their defensive structure looks. A modern, attack-minded left-back of Balde’s calibre would tick several boxes at once.

Back in Barcelona, Flick has to pick a team for Elche without the player who, not so long ago, was billed as the long-term heir on the left flank. With Balde cut, Jordi Pesquer is expected to start, as had been suggested earlier in the week. The coaching staff have also included new permanent signing Joao Cancelo in the travelling party, but after his move from Al-Hilal this week, there are serious doubts about whether he is ready to start.
