Alessia Russo Leads Arsenal to 3-0 Victory Over Aston Villa
Alessia Russo’s ruthless double drove Arsenal to a commanding 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park, a result that tightens the grip on a UEFA Women’s Champions League place and drags Chelsea firmly into view.
Within five minutes, the tone was set. Within 90, the message was clear.
Russo and Maanum run the show
Renee Slegers pushed Smilla Holmberg higher up the pitch after her midweek shift at full-back, and the tweak paid off almost immediately. Holmberg went straight at Rachel Maltby, skipped past her and stood up a cross for Russo inside three minutes. The shot was blocked, but Villa had already been warned.
Two minutes later, they were punished. Holmberg’s next delivery caused chaos, Sabrina D’Angelo failed to deal with it, and the ball dropped invitingly for Russo. The England forward needed no second invitation, rising to head in her 10th league goal of the season as Noelle Maritz’s desperate attempt to clear only helped it on its way.
Arsenal smelled space and went after it. Olivia Smith snapped into a challenge, fed Frida Maanum, and the Norwegian slid Russo in again. This time the shot never came, crowded out at the last second, but Villa were hanging on.
Remarkably, Slegers’ side looked sharper despite playing less than 72 hours earlier. Russo drifted wide, whipped in a vicious cross, and Holmberg arrived at the back post, stabbing just wide. Villa finally registered a chance on 20 minutes, Ebony Salmon climbing highest at the far post, but her header fell tamely into Anneke Borbe’s gloves.
Then the game’s outstanding partnership took over.
Russo, already on the scoresheet, turned provider with a gorgeous, outside-of-the-boot flick that sliced open the Villa back line. Maanum timed her run to perfection and finished with the assurance of a player reaching a landmark. Goal number 50 in Arsenal colours, swept in with minimal fuss, and the visitors were cruising.
Arsenal could have buried it before the interval. Taylor Hinds slipped Smith through on goal, only for D’Angelo to stand tall and block. Maanum then met a wicked Holmberg set-piece, again drawing a sharp save from the Villa keeper, who was the only reason the contest retained any tension at half-time.
The third goal, the statement win
Any lingering doubt vanished shortly after the restart.
Mariona Caldentey, quiet but precise, stitched together another move down the left, releasing Hinds on the overlap. The full-back drove forward, picked out Maanum between the lines, and the Norwegian threaded a clever pass into Russo’s path. One touch to round D’Angelo, one composed finish in front of the travelling Arsenal support. Clinical. 3-0. Game done.
Slegers wasted no time in managing legs and minutes. Russo, brace secured, made way alongside Holmberg, with Beth Mead – on her birthday – and Stina Blackstenius introduced. Blackstenius almost scored with her first real involvement, racing onto a slick team move only to fire straight at D’Angelo.
Arsenal did not ease off. From a set piece, the ball broke to Smith on the edge of the area. She killed it with one touch and unleashed a rising strike that looked destined for the top corner until Miri Taylor threw herself in the way and deflected it over.
The changes kept coming. Victoria Pelova replaced Kim Little and immediately found pockets of space. One such opening on the edge of the box brought another effort on target, again repelled by the overworked D’Angelo.
By then, the pattern was brutal and unrelenting. Arsenal carved out more than 20 chances, with Blackstenius the next to go close, curling just over after finding room inside the area.
At the other end, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Laia Codina quietly locked the door. Villa were limited to scraps, their threat reduced to hopeful moments rather than sustained pressure, as Arsenal collected a 10th clean sheet of the league campaign.
There was still time for Hinds to almost crown her afternoon with a first goal in Arsenal colours, driving low from close range, only to be denied yet again by D’Angelo.
Chelsea in sight, Everton up next
The win does more than secure at least a Champions League qualifying spot for next season. It drags Arsenal to within a single point of Chelsea in second, with momentum building at precisely the right stage of the run-in.
Next comes Everton at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, May 13, the final home game of the season and one last chance for this side to perform in N5 before the curtain falls.
Then, on Saturday, May 16, a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool will close out the 2025/26 campaign.
With Russo firing, Maanum hitting milestones, and the defence churning out clean sheets, the question now is simple: how high can this team finish from here?
