Alvaro Arbeloa Pursues Cesar Palacios for Fulham
Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. And he’s looking in a very familiar direction to do it.
The former Real Madrid full-back, now in charge at Craven Cottage, has turned again to Valdebebas, pushing the club’s hierarchy to move for Castilla attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios as he builds his first Premier League squad.
Arbeloa turns to a trusted talent
Arbeloa knows exactly what he would be getting. He coached Palacios with Castilla and worked with him around the Real Madrid first team, even handing the 21-year-old his senior debut for Los Blancos back in January. Seven appearances followed, enough to confirm what Madrid’s academy staff had long suspected: this is a player with the technique and temperament to handle big stages.
But not, it seems, the minutes.
Despite starting pre-season with the first team at the Santiago Bernabeu, Palacios is still expected to spend the coming campaign away from Madrid. The pathway into a stacked senior squad remains blocked, and with his contract running to 2027, the club know they cannot park his development for long.
That is where Fulham – and Arbeloa – see an opening.
A move that collapsed, and a market that’s watching
Palacios’ future already looked to be heading in a different direction earlier this summer. He reached a verbal agreement with Como, with both the player and his camp believing the deal was on the brink of completion. Terms were discussed, the project laid out, the move all but framed.
Then it fell apart before pen ever met paper.
Since that collapse, interest has not disappeared. FC Porto and Osasuna have both explored the possibility of signing him, testing the waters without pushing through to a final agreement. For now, nothing has been advanced enough to drag him away from Madrid.
So Palacios is back at Valdebebas, working, waiting, and weighing his options with the club. The decision over his next step will shape the most important phase of his young career.
Arbeloa wants to be the one offering that step.
Fulham reunion on the table
For the Spanish coach, the appeal is obvious. Palacios fits the profile he trusts: technically sharp, tactically educated in Madrid’s system, and already familiar with his demands. Dropping such a player into a new-look Fulham side would give Arbeloa a bridge between his ideas and the Premier League reality he now faces.
Regular minutes in Madrid’s senior team look unlikely this season. That makes an exit – permanent or on loan – more than just a possibility. It feels like the logical next move, especially with that 2027 contract giving Madrid leverage and time to protect his value.
Arbeloa has therefore asked Fulham’s decision-makers to explore a deal. The message is clear: this is not just a name on a longlist, this is a priority target.
Not just Palacios: a wider Madrid plan
Palacios is only one part of a broader pattern. Arbeloa’s Fulham are tracking more than a single familiar face.
Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono are also on his radar, further proof that the new manager is leaning heavily on what he knows best – the Real Madrid talent pool he helped shape. There is, however, a significant variable back in Spain.
Jose Mourinho, Arbeloa’s successor at Real Madrid, intends to take a close look at these youngsters during pre-season before making any final calls on their futures. He wants to see them up close, under pressure, in his sessions. Only then will Madrid decide who leaves, who stays, and on what terms.
So the race is not just against rival clubs. It is against time, and against Mourinho’s judgment.
