Andrey Santos Set for Manchester United Debut Against Wrexham
Andrey Santos is in line for his first Manchester United appearance on Saturday after being named in the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki.
The 22-year-old Brazilian, Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing, only completed his move from Chelsea on Monday in a deal that could rise to £50 million ($67.2m). He has wasted no time bedding in, spending the week at Carrington before being fast-tracked into a 25-man group that blends established names with hungry prospects.
Santos steps into the spotlight
Carrick’s midfield options are still short of full strength, with several senior players – including fellow new arrival Youri Tielemans – yet to rejoin the squad after their World Cup exertions. That leaves space and responsibility for Santos, who arrives with a sizeable price tag and the expectation that he can help reshape United’s engine room.
He will not be the only new face absent-mindedly checking the badge on his training top. The group for Finland features a strong core of first-team regulars: Harry Maguire, Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount, and Joshua Zirkzee all travel, giving the game more than the usual pre-season gloss.
Around them, Carrick has sprinkled youth. Highly rated youngsters Harry Amass and Shea Lacey are involved, offering a glimpse of the club’s next wave. Jaydan Kamason will push for minutes at right-back, while midfielders Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Jim Thwaites are included alongside Tyler and Jack Fletcher.
Sesko sits out as forwards jostle
One notable absentee is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia striker, who missed the final three games of last season with a shin injury, remains on an individual programme as he works back towards full fitness and has not travelled.
His omission opens a door. Young forwards Chidi Obi and Ethan Wheatley are both on the plane and could seize valuable minutes in attack with JJ Gabriel left out of the squad. Pre-season often changes pecking orders; this is their chance to do exactly that.
In goal, new signing Karl Darlow will have to wait for his first outing. The experienced keeper, who arrived on a free from Leeds this week, has not been included. Instead, veteran Tom Heaton provides the senior presence, supported by Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee.
Wrexham balance ambition and caution
Opponents Wrexham have their own plans to manage. Phil Parkinson’s side are using the Helsinki trip as a tune-up before they fly to the United States next week for high-profile friendlies against Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland.
They will do so without Josh Windass and Max Cleworth in Finland. Parkinson explained the thinking, stressing fitness over risk.
“We're where we need to be in terms of fitness,” the Wrexham manager said. “We've got a few lads, like most clubs, who have come back in later, with one or two niggly things which have carried over from last season.
“However, we're not overly concerned with those and the lads are in a good place. There'll be a few who aren't quite ready for the game at the weekend and will be training here instead.
“Josh has been running this week. He's had a slight problem with his calf, but he's in great shape and there's no need to rush him too much. Max had a problem with his Achilles, which has been an ongoing problem. But we feel this off-season, and this slow build-up for him now, will do him good.”
For United, the focus in Helsinki will be sharp: minutes in the legs, patterns in possession, and a first real look at Andrey Santos in red. For a club deep into a rebuild, how quickly he settles could say plenty about the season that lies ahead.
