Arsenal and Chelsea Face Transfer Challenges as January Window Approaches
The Premier League window is shut. The money has been spent. But the market is still twitching.
Across Europe, deals are still being pushed, revived and ripped up as clubs scramble to fix what they missed in the summer’s frenzy.
Arsenal miss their ‘nine’ and look to January
Arsenal slipped quietly over the deadline. No marquee striker, no late fireworks.
Julian Alvarez stayed out of reach, forcing the Gunners to scan the market for alternatives in the final hours. That led them to Inter Milan and Lautaro Martinez. Arsenal explored a significant move for the Inter captain, but the Italian club simply refused to engage.
Martinez later confirmed Barcelona’s interest was real, yet he chose to stay in Milan, stressing how comfortable he feels at Inter and his desire to keep chasing trophies there. Arsenal, already frustrated by the Alvarez dead end, were left empty-handed again.
Gabriel Martinelli did depart, completing his move to Saudi Arabia on Thursday, and Andria Bartishvili has undergone a medical as part of Arsenal’s reshaping. But the headline centre-forward never arrived. Mikel Arteta goes into the new season without the elite striker the club had hoped to unveil.
Attention is already drifting to January. Arsenal retain an interest in Vinicius Junior and Alvarez, with reports suggesting both could come back into focus if injuries bite and attacking depth becomes an issue. Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, who impressed before a pre-season injury halted his momentum, also remains on their radar.
Chelsea rip up midfield and plan €100m raid
Chelsea’s deadline day was pure chaos.
Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City in a British-record-equalling £125million deal, ripping a key piece out of Xabi Alonso’s midfield just as the window slammed shut. Chelsea thought they had his replacement lined up in Lamine Camara, only for Monaco to walk away and kill the move at the last moment.
So the plan shifts again. The new name at the top of the list is Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios.
Chelsea are now preparing for a January assault, with a €100m offer under consideration for the Spain international. Alonso views Barrios as the ideal successor to Fernandez: technically sharp, already important at Atletico and young enough to build around. Chelsea believe a huge bid could seriously test Atletico’s resolve.
They were busy elsewhere too. A verbal agreement was reached with Roma for Manu Kone, with club owners directly involved, before the deal collapsed when Roma ran out of time to find a replacement and Gian Piero Gasperini vetoed the midfielder’s exit.
Everton also rejected a late £65m bid from Chelsea for James Garner, unwilling to lose him without time to sign cover. It leaves Alonso with a midfield still in flux and a January window already looming large.
Off the pitch, Chelsea Women made a significant call of their own. Erin Cuthbert has been named captain for the 2026/27 season, replacing Millie Bright after the England defender’s surprise decision to retire in April. Now in her tenth year at the club and already on 301 appearances, the Scot called the role “a great honour” and spoke of understanding the weight of the armband at Chelsea.
Richarlison’s Turkey deadline
For Richarlison, the clock is brutal.
The Tottenham forward has been omitted from Spurs’ Premier League squad and faces the stark reality of Turkey as his only route to football for the rest of the calendar year. The Turkish window shuts at midnight local time — 10pm in the UK — and the Brazil international is locked in talks with Trabzonspor.
Personal terms are said to be agreed. The sticking point now lies between the clubs as they haggle over a fee.
Everton had previously struck an agreement worth an initial £25m to bring him back, but Richarlison could not agree a contract, leaving that move dead and Turkey as his remaining option.
Trabzonspor need him. They have taken just four points from their opening three league games and were thrashed 5-0 on aggregate by Ferencvaros in their Europa League play-off. A forward of Richarlison’s profile would be a statement signing for a side trying to pull their season back into shape.
Manchester clubs plot attacking tweaks
At Manchester City, the planning never stops.
With Erling Haaland the immovable focal point, City have quietly identified Antoine Semenyo as their preferred option to lead the line when the Norwegian is unavailable or withdrawn. The Independent reports that the Bournemouth forward is now seen as Enzo Maresca’s main alternative through the middle, a nod to Semenyo’s power, work rate and growing Premier League pedigree.
On the red side of Manchester, United’s business is largely done, but the wider market around them remains restless as rivals position for the winter window.
Newcastle and Villa circle Kofane
Two ambitious clubs, one emerging forward.
Newcastle and Aston Villa are set for a January battle over Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane. Football Insider reports that both clubs want the 20-year-old as they look to deepen their attacking options for the second half of the season.
With European commitments stretching squads, a young, developing striker like Kofane fits the profile both clubs have targeted in recent years.
England U21s turn to Coady and Williams
Away from the transfer rush, England’s development pathway has a new look.
Conor Coady and Paul Williams will join Lee Carsley’s England U21 coaching staff this autumn following Ashley Cole’s departure. Coady, 33, returns to the setup after previously working with the MU19s earlier this year. The former Wolves defender won 10 senior caps and featured at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
Williams, who enjoyed a long playing career with extensive Premier League experience, steps up from England’s U15s and will combine his new role with his position as a senior coach developer at the FA.
The Young Lions, reigning European champions, have three Euro 2027 qualifiers left as they look to secure their place at next summer’s finals. Fresh voices in the dugout arrive just as the stakes rise.
The windows may be closing, but the storylines are only just taking shape. January already feels closer than the calendar suggests.
