Arsenal Considering Loan for Record-Breaking Teen Max Dowman
Arsenal are prepared to let teenage sensation Max Dowman leave on loan this season if it accelerates his development, with the club set to review his situation throughout the campaign.
The 16-year-old midfielder exploded onto the scene last season, ripping up the record books as he became both Arsenal’s youngest-ever scorer and the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. Those milestones turned him from academy prospect into headline name overnight.
He hasn’t featured in the league so far this term, but he reminded everyone of his talent with a sharp, composed brace in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win away at Ipswich. Two chances, two ruthless finishes. The noise around him started again.
Mikel Arteta wants that noise managed carefully.
The Arsenal manager is determined to keep Dowman close to the senior group but made it clear the club will constantly reassess what the teenager needs at this stage of his career.
“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta said. “It depends on a lot of factors. What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.”
That line about “the qualities of those minutes” is telling. Arsenal don’t just want him on the pitch; they want him in games that stretch him, shape him, and justify the hype.
For now, Dowman remains in-house. Arsenal have deliberately kept a tight grip on his future, shutting out early transfer noise over the summer to ensure he stayed fully embedded with the first team rather than becoming a name on a loan list.
“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad,” Arteta added. “We wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there. We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”
That “open” part will soon be tested.
Dowman, who only finished his GCSEs in the summer, cannot move on a senior loan until he turns 17 on December 31. The winter transfer window opens the very next day, offering a perfectly timed doorway into the English Football League if Arsenal decide the moment has come.
One potential destination is already circling. Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, now in charge of League One side Luton, is understood to have expressed an interest in taking Dowman on a temporary deal for the rest of the season.
