Arsenal's Marli Salmon Withdraws from England Under-18 Squad Due to Injury

Arsenal youngster Marli Salmon has been forced to pull out of the England Under-18 squad after suffering an injury, halting his rapid rise just as it began to gather pace.

The 17-year-old defender, highly regarded inside Arsenal’s academy, had only just enjoyed his first senior outing of the season, coming off the bench in the 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday. That appearance was meant to be the springboard. England recognition was the next step.

Instead, he will watch this international window from home.

First Under-18 call ends before it begins

Salmon had been named in Will Antwi’s squad for a trio of Under-18 friendlies against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea, a natural progression after four caps at Under-17 level. It would have been his first taste of football at that age group for his country.

The chance will have to wait.

He has withdrawn through injury, with the exact problem yet to be disclosed. England have moved quickly, calling up Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou, who has already represented both Poland and England in youth football.

Salmon, meanwhile, returns to Arsenal to begin his recovery. The club are hopeful the issue is not serious. If his rehab goes smoothly, he is expected to be back in action for the Under-21s in a Premier League 2 meeting with Sunderland on October 10. That date carries a caveat: should Mikel Arteta decide he needs defensive cover, Salmon could instead find himself in the senior squad for the Premier League clash with Leeds on the same day.

For a teenager on the brink of a breakthrough, both doors remain slightly ajar.

Rice steps back, Hincapie left out

Salmon is not the only Arsenal player stepping away from international duty. On the same day, Declan Rice also withdrew from Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad.

Rice’s absence is understood to be down to load management after a punishing calendar. The midfielder played 55 games for Arsenal last season, plus seven at the World Cup, and has already started six of the club’s eight matches in the current campaign, including all five in the Premier League. England and Arsenal have chosen caution over risk.

Elsewhere, Piero Hincapie has been left out of Ecuador’s squad amid concerns over his fitness, underlining a broader theme around player workload at the top level.

For Salmon, the story is different in scale but not in feeling. His international bow is paused, not cancelled. The next question is simple: how quickly can he turn this setback into his next opportunity?
